Verity:
In his sleep, he looked so peaceful. So calm. So handsome.
Yet he was also the same cold, heartless man I knew.
I didn’t know what I was feeling.
It was a confusing mix of emotions when I was supposed to feel only one thing toward him.
Hate.
But something about his sleeping face seemed almost innocent.
He continued to sleep, his breathing slow and steady.
Then a thought struck me.
Imagine if Gigi could see us right now.
She would have died of jealousy.
After watching his face for a little while longer, sleep slowly began to pull me under again.
Without thinking, I nestled my face against his chest and wrapped an arm around his waist, hugging him tightly.
Alpha King Ragnar’s scent was completely different from his brothers’.
They all smelled good, but there was something strangely captivating about his.
It felt like home, even though he was the coldest man I had ever known.
There was a depth to his scent, something almost mesmerizing.
It was comforting enough to make you forget, even for a moment, everything he had done.
And then there were his muscles.
The first time I had wrapped my arms around him, I had felt the hard muscles of his back.
No wonder he worked out so much. All of the brothers did, but their bodies still felt different.
Ragnar’s body felt— forbidden.
Even wrapping my arm around him felt like I was touching someone who didn’t belong to me.
Not that any of the brothers belonged to me.
None of them did.
Yet something about Ragnar sent goosebumps racing over my skin.
Maybe it was because he was so cold, so savage, that lying there in his arms felt as impossible as the Moon Goddess descending to earth to live among us.
Thinking that, I drifted back to sleep.
The next time I opened my eyes, I immediately realized he had finally done exactly what I’d expected from the beginning.
He was gone.
But I was tucked comfortably beneath the blanket.
There was a pillow beneath my head, and the robe around my body had been carefully pulled back into place.
I bit my bottom lip, wondering what he had done before he left.
Lying there, I absentmindedly brushed my fingers over my neck.
Maybe when he’d woken up and carefully moved away from me, he had seen my whole body.
He must have.
Had he looked at me?
Had he noticed every inch of me?
Had he touched me at all?
Maybe he hadn’t done anything like that. It didn’t seem like something he would do.
And yet—
A small part of me wished he had.
Because then I’d know I had done a great job last night.
I sat up in bed with a pout, but a smile slowly crept onto my lips.
At least something had changed.
The fact that he’d reacted so strongly to me the night before had to mean something.
Maybe, just maybe, I’d stirred feelings in him that he could no longer ignore.
She had probably dyed it too.
But that wasn’t what caught most of my attention.
Her burgundy hair was now cut into a jaw-length bob.
It framed her face beautifully, ending just around her jawline, and looked healthy and freshly styled.
I took a deep breath.
It was as if that breath alone had caught Ragnar’s attention because he immediately looked up, and our eyes met.
I noticed his body go completely still before his jaw clenched ever so slightly.
He remembered what had happened last night.
But he didn’t know that I’d caught him sleeping beside me, cuddling me for who knew how long.
Of course, if I ever asked him about it, he’d probably claim he had left immediately.
Not that I was planning to ask him.
"Oh, Verity."
Gigi finally looked up from her phone and beamed at me.
To her, I was still the girl she’d decided to spy on Ragnar.
"Hi, Gigi. New hair, looks good," I greeted, slowly walking over before taking a seat on the sofa across from them.
Ragnar looked away, rubbing his forehead with his thumb.
"Awe thank you," she smiled to herself, "what have you got there?" she asked, leaning forward to look at my phone.
"The screen broke last night, so I was thinking of getting it fixed," I replied, smiling as I showed it to her.
"How about we go together and get it fixed?"
The offer caught me by surprise.
Ragnar lowered his gaze. Then he glanced at Gigi from the corner of his eye before briefly looking at me.
A split second later, he looked away again.
I had a feeling he was worried I’d tell Gigi about what had happened last night.
