Verity:
"You need to calm down. Stop screaming at me," I said calmly. "It was the Alpha King’s orders. He had a health scare, so I—"
I was cut off by his loud grunt.
"The fact that you did something so wrong and now you’re making excuses just bewilders me. Where’s the apology, huh, Verity? Where’s, ’I’m sorry, Roman. I’ll be more careful next time’? Where is that?" he demanded.
I clenched my fists and stared at my reflection in the mirror.
Do I really have to put up with his bullshit?
Normally, I wouldn’t.
Not anymore.
But now I had no other choice.
"I’m sorry, Roman. It won’t happen again."
I softened my tone, feeling incredibly annoyed that I had to apologize at all.
"You know what? I want to see you," he declared, making my spine stiffen.
"You can’t come here. You know this isn’t a picnic spot. They only let me stay because I’m working here. Think of it as a job. I’m planning an event," I explained, scrambling for excuses.
From the way I spoke, he could already tell I was uncomfortable with the idea of him coming here.
"I’m not talking about coming over there. You’re going to visit me at my place. We’ll spend a weekend together. A very romantic getaway. Then you can go back to planning an event or whatever bullshit you’re doing to earn that little money."
He spoke with obvious contempt when he mentioned my job, making it clear he had no respect for what I did.
In his eyes, nothing I did could compare to him being a doctor.
"Uh– this weekend isn’t really possible," I replied, struggling to catch my breath.
That’s when I realized what he wanted.
He wanted to take our relationship to the next level.
And I wasn’t ready.
I couldn’t be.
This relationship had always been my escape, a way to stop the brothers from officially asking me out.
Whenever I was angry with them, I’d simply throw, ’I have a boyfriend,’ in their faces.
"Fine. Then how about tomorrow? It’s a public holiday. Tomorrow and the next three days are all holidays because of the Moon eclipse Festival and the New Pack Project celebrations. So come stay with me then."
As he said that, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.
"Actually, I have work here," I replied, keeping my voice as soft and gentle as possible.
"Then ask the brothers for a few days off. Take three days, and we’ll spend them together," he insisted, filling me with anxiety.
He was becoming impossible to deal with.
No matter how many excuses I gave him, he just kept coming up with more demands.
"I can’t do that. I just joined this project," I replied, trying to make him understand that the event was less than ten days away. I couldn’t afford to waste any more time.
"Well then, Verity, that’s too bad, because I’ll just have to come over there and have a conversation with them."
His tone changed abruptly.
It sounded like a threat.
No, it was a threat.
There was unmistakable blackmail hidden beneath his words.
"And you know what I’ll tell them, don’t you?" he continued. "I’ll tell them how hard you’ve been working for the past two years after your brother’s–" He paused, deliberately leaving the sentence unfinished. "So that you can finally get some rest," he finished.
I could almost picture the smirk spreading across his lips.
"So tell me, Verity. Will you be able to ask for a few days off?"
This time, his voice sent chills down my spine.
