Chapter 231: 231-The Dark Truth About Royals

Verity:

He thought I was trying to follow him.

"I wasn’t following you," I replied.

He turned fully toward me, resting his hands on his hips.

"Then why are you heading outside?" he questioned, his jaw tightening.

I just stared at him for a moment before rubbing my forehead.

"Actually, I was just going to get some fresh air, but it’s fine. I’ll just go back to my room and breathe through the window," I answered awkwardly.

Then I turned around and hurried back to my room.

Why the heck did he leave me speechless?

I never got speechless anymore.

Once I was back in my bedroom, I went straight to the window.

And what did I see?

Jenna had collapsed to her knees.

Instead of getting back up, she just sat there, crying on the ground.

That couldn’t be good.

Ragnar was on his way outside.

I guessed Jenna had gotten so comfortable sneaking back in this way that she’d done it many times before.

No wonder she’d had that bump on her forehead the other night.

So I opened my bedroom window and climbed out.

Walking across the garden in high heels was difficult enough, let alone while panicking.

By the time I reached her, she looked up, her eyes widening in shock.

She hadn’t expected me to see her.

Then again, I was the least of her problems.

Her biggest concern was getting back inside without Ragnar catching her.

Before she could ask what I was doing outside, or come up with another excuse, I grabbed her arm and helped her to her feet.

"Come on. Alpha King Ragnar is coming outside for a jog," I warned.

She gasped, clutched my hand, and pulled herself upright.

I hurried her toward her bedroom window.

The moment I heard Ragnar’s footsteps, I pulled her behind the wall.

He hadn’t come around the corner yet.

I waited.

She clung tightly to my arm.

In those few tense moments, she lowered her head onto my shoulder and began to cry.

Her eyes were barely open, as though she were trying to hide them.

Her whole body was trembling.

She was freezing.

The moment Ragnar left through the main gate, I pulled away from Jenna to look at her.

I grabbed both her arms and gave them a gentle shake, trying to get her to lift her head.

When she finally did, I saw a handprint on her cheek.

Something inside me snapped.

A protective instinct I didn’t even know I had surged to life.

"Who the heck did that to you?" I asked softly, reaching out to touch her cheek.

She shook her head and caught my hand before it could reach her.

Then she rushed into my arms.

The way she broke down in my embrace shook me to my core.

Soft sobs escaped her lips, and each one made my heart ache for her.

"Jenna, please tell me. What happened? Did your friend do something? I want to know," I insisted, still hugging her.

She finally seemed to cry herself out.

After a few moments, she pulled away and shook her head.

"I need to rest now. I’ll talk to you in the morning."

The way she avoided my gaze filled me with dread.
