Verity:
I would usually take a cab home, but that day the rain was coming down so heavily that all I wanted was to get home as quickly as possible.
So I took the road on foot.
The moment I stepped onto the street, I realized someone was watching me.
I turned and saw a man in a black hoodie standing near a corner, almost as if he had been waiting specifically for me.
I immediately picked up my pace, clutching my office bag and phone.
My high heels barely clicked against the flooded pavement.
Rain drummed steadily against my umbrella, while my heartbeat pounded in my ears.
I started walking even faster.
Then, as I rounded a corner, the man sped up too.
No, no, no!
The moment he got closer, panic surged through me.
Just as I had suspected, he had been waiting for me.
The second I turned the corner, he slammed me against the wall and yanked my bag from my shoulder.
My phone was still in my hand.
If I had run instead of trying to hurry away, or if I had immediately called one of the Warriors, I might have escaped the situation.
But whatever happened, happened.
"What do you want? Do you want money? I don’t have much cash on me," I blurted out as he rummaged through my bag.
"What are you doing?" I demanded, glancing around while trying to keep my distance from him.
That day, I was wearing a gray top and a tight white skirt. Running would have been difficult enough in high heels, but the pouring rain made it even worse.
My umbrella had blown away and now lay helplessly in the middle of the road.
The man turned my purse upside down until an envelope fell out.
There was only a hundred dollars inside, but it was a lot to someone like me.
I needed every penny to maintain the image expected by the Alpha Kings.
And there were three of them.
That meant I had to work even harder.
My heart pounded against my chest as the man finished searching the envelope.
Then he started going through the rest of my bag.
His eyes darkened as he looked at me.
Then his gaze dropped to my neckline.
My heart started pounding.
Earlier, I had left a few buttons of my shirt open to catch the brothers’ attention, but now I was realizing I had attracted the attention of the wrong person.
I couldn’t even see his face clearly as he stood in the rain, breathing heavily beneath the hoodie.
Then he lunged at me.
Thankfully, he didn’t seem interested in me, which was a disturbing thing to even think of.
But at that moment, all I could think was that things could have been worse.
His attention was fixed on the necklace around my neck.
It was a small pendant. It didn’t cost much, but it looked expensive.
In simple terms, it was a dupe.
He didn’t know that.
He wanted to take anything of value he could get his hands on.
When he lunged at me, I fought back and instinctively threw my hands up. The pendant slipped into my bra, disappearing between my breasts.
The man grabbed my wrists and forced them apart to stop me from resisting.
