Chapter 226

Rebecca snorted inwardly, “Dream on.”

But Vance’s request was rhetorical; he didn’t truly expect assistance.

He simply showered, then methodically packed his things. Once done, he lingered instead of leaving.

Rebecca itched to call Josette, his presence an unwelcome obstacle. She urged, “Aren’t you leaving yet?”

“Couldn’t you soften that a touch?” he replied, moving behind her.

Seated at the vanity, Rebecca was untying her hair. He assisted, removing the band before leaning down to hug her.

Their reflections met in the mirror, his cheek pressed to hers.

Proximity to him now repulsed Rebecca. It evoked traces of Catherine’s scent, churning her stomach. She shifted uncomfortably, but his embrace tightened.

“I’m about to hit the road. Won’t you wish me safe travels?” he whispered into her ear.

Rebecca regretted her lingering softness. A harder heart might have entertained darker fantasies, like the perks of inheritance.

Glaring at his mirrored image, she retorted, “Aren’t you worried I’ll hex you instead? You’ve got quite the

fortune at stake.”

“You wouldn’t. You’re far too compassionate,” he chuckled.

The compliment made her pause, and he continued, “The same girl who once offered me five bucks a day? Curse me? Unlikely.”

Discomfort rippled through her, compounded by confusion. What was he playing at, dredging up events from 12 years ago? He’d always despised her teenage infatuation.

He breathed deeply, his hold intensifying. “I can’t explain it, but this trip has me on edge. It’s like something ominous is looming.”

She stiffened. Indeed, something was going to happen, but her departure couldn’t register as a catastrophe in any sense.

“Are

you afraid of flying? You’ve crisscrossed the skies before. Scared of dying now?”

“I am.”

She fell silent, processing his words.

He continued, “If something happened to me, how would you manage? Who would look after you?”

The words struck her as absurdly hypocritical, coming from the man who’d abandoned her during a

kidnapping.

“Indulge me and wish for my safe return,” he murmured.

The request tipped her over the edge into genuine, tearful laughter. Her husband, off to frolic on islands with another woman, expecting well-wishes?

The audacity was comical. How could he utter it without shame?

“Unwilling? You don’t want me to return safely?” he pressed. “$500,000 for the phrase.”

“Well…” She straightened her face. “Money or not, I sincerely hope you make it back unscathed. Safe journey, Mr. Bradford.”

“Shortchanging me there,” he teased, straightening up and promptly transferring the funds.

Some simple words for money? Not a bad deal.

“I’m heading out now. Stay put and wait for my return,” he said, bending down to peck her cheek.

She wrinkled her nose but let it slide for money’s sake.

The door clicked shut behind him, followed by his call to the driver. As the elevator descended, Rebecca finally relaxed and called Josette, opting to delay her visit until the next morning.

By midnight, she’d wrapped up every loose end and collapsed into bed.
