Chapter 227

Vance’s message arrived, announcing his boarding.

Rebecca didn’t reply; his whereabouts no longer sparked curiosity. Her thoughts swirled entirely around her own impending flight tomorrow.

She’d set an alarm for 4 a.m. By then, she’d pick up Josette before heading to the airport. Sleep was

essential now.

Yet Vance persisted, initiating a video call. Reluctant but cautious, she accepted.

The feed revealed him in the VIP lounge, flashing a smile.

“Were you asleep? Did I wake you?”

“Yeah.”

“Nothing urgent. Just wanted a glimpse of what you’re up to. Go back to sleep. I’m going to board.”

Catherine’s face intruded into the frame, and she waved cheerfully. “Rebecca, I’m so sorry about this. My availability dries up later, so I pulled Vance along now. Please don’t hold it against me.”

“She won’t mind. Time to go,” Vance interjected, ending the call.

Rebecca discarded her phone and resumed her sleep. She was restless, frequently waking up to check

the clock.

Exhilaration and anxiety mixed in her heart. By 3:30, she surrendered and rose early.

She readied herself, and soon, it was time to leave.

Vance had urged her to stay at home and wait for his return. Would the barren closets signal her permanent exit from him? If not, the notes and papers would clarify.

She cast one final glance over the home she’d inhabited for five years. In her notebook, she inscribed a closing entry: [Countdown to leaving Vance: 0 days. Farewell. I’m soaring high.]

She closed the notebook, turned off the lights, and affixed a paper crane to the door. It would stand sentinel in her stead, perhaps whispering the truth upon his return.

Though dawn hadn’t broken, her spirit felt illuminated. An inner blaze rendered her vibrant and unburdened.

She summoned a ride to Josette’s hotel. En route, she texted: [Ready? I’m arriving soon.]

Josette: [Prepping to check out.]

They converged in the lobby, where Vivian accompanied Josette.

She hugged Vivian tightly. The preceding weeks had felt both fleeting and eternal, with Vivian’s support

invaluable.

“Thank you, Vivian,” she whispered gratefully.

“No worries. Hurry along. We might cross paths again someday,” Vivian replied, her relief palpable at fulfilling the entrusted duty.

“We will,” Rebecca affirmed, releasing her with a firm hand squeeze.

Hailing a cab, they hastened to the airport. Check-in and security proceeded without issue.

In the lounge, Rebecca arranged a simple breakfast for Josette. “Make do with this for now, Grandma. We’ll grab something better after we land.”

“No trouble at all; this is plenty,” Josette replied, though her advanced years made this impulsive

adventure a source of visible tension. It was her first taste of such defiance.

As Rebecca delivered the toasted bread to their table, her phone rang. Dread accompanied the sound now, especially when it was from Vance.

She paused, wondering what he wanted this time. 1
