Chapter 228

Thankfully, the lounge was quiet.

“Hello?” Rebecca answered.

“Why the whisper? What are you up to?” Vance asked.

“I’m having breakfast. The place is quiet; I can’t talk loudly,” she replied, muffling her voice further. “Why all these calls?”

It grated on her nerves.

He sounded affronted. “What, am I bothering you now?”

Far beyond that. She rolled her eyes. “Not exactly. Just irritating.”

“But taking the money wasn’t irritating, was it?” he snorted.

She took a deep breath, trying to make it quick and avoid arousing suspicion. “Got a point?”

“Can’t I just call you?” he countered.

Rebecca stifled her exasperation. His behavior was getting more and more baffling.

I

“Of course,” she conceded with feigned patience. “So, may I hear your instructions?”

“Cheeky.” He softened his tone. “I’m on a layover, not boarding yet. Just checking if you’re awake.”

That was pure idleness.

“Anything you want to tell me?” he prompted.

Munching a grape, she mumbled an indistinct “oh”.

“Rebecca?” His voice sharpened, hinting at annoyance. “Is your snack more pressing than my well-being?

h

Rebecca swallowed. “You run into trouble? Like a mugging?”

A prolonged sigh echoed from his end. “Never mind. Enjoy your meal. Just wanted to hear your voice. I’m about to board.”

The call ended, beeps coming through the line. Rebecca stared at her phone, bemused. a

Josette leaned in discreetly. “Vance?”

“Yeah,” Rebecca nodded. “From here on, it’s you and me against the world. Sounds good?”

Josette’s heart ached. She’d hoped the couple would reconcile, but Rebecca’s determination spoke of profound pain. Having suffered a lifetime of compromises, she didn’t want Rebecca to endure the same.

“Absolutely,” she agreed with a warm smile, patting Rebecca’s hand.

Vance put away his phone. Catherine glanced at him several times from the side.

“Vance…”

“Hm? Let’s go. It’s time to board.”

“You seem really concerned about Rebecca. You’ve made so many calls.”

Vance frowned a little, not noticing her strange expression. “I don’t know, but something about this trip feels off. Like something is about to happen.” 1

“Are you worried that something might happen to Rebecca? Why not have Aiden and Lucas check on her? ” she probed.

“They are like oil and water,” he sighed. “I have no idea how it got this bad.”

“What can we do then?” she muttered, her face etched with concern. “Maybe I shouldn’t have dragged you out here?”

“It’s fine,” he reassured her. “I just heard her voice, and she sounded okay. That put my mind at ease.”

“You actually care a lot about Rebecca, don’t you?” she asked with a smile, though an undercurrent of sorrow welled up in her eyes.

He paused. “She couldn’t survive without me; she is my responsibility. So…” 1

“I understand,” she said sweetly. “Don’t forget. I’m the one person in the world who truly gets you.”

“Yeah. Since we’re out here, let’s just have fun,” he smiled.

Those exact words were what Rebecca said to Josette.

Almost simultaneously, the boarding announcement echoed through the lounge for the flight. She took Josette’s hand. “Let’s go, Grandma. We’re off to have some real fun!”

Two hours later, they arrived in Arelmoor, not expecting Lauren and Desmond to come pick them up. Arm in arm with Josette, she was shocked to see Desmond waving at the arrivals gate.

Lauren lit up. “We’ve been waiting for you! This must be your grandmother, right? Come on, let’s head straight to the apartment, then grab some food together.”

The place Lauren had found for Josette was in a relatively new neighborhood with a great environment.

There were parks for strolls and a large mall nearby, making shopping and errands convenient, and the complex itself was well-maintained.

Considering secrecy, Josette didn’t plan to hire any help during her short stay, so the rental was modestly sized with two bedrooms, Rebecca could stay when visiting.

The layout was efficient, and everything was equipped. It was quite ideal.

Lauren had covered the rent upfront. Rebecca was deeply grateful and immediately transferred the funds back to her.

They had arrived in Arelmoor a day ahead of schedule, which was not bad. It gave her ample time to purchase necessities and settle Josette in, allowing her to leave with ease.

That afternoon, Lauren and Desmond accompanied her to buy clothes, household essentials, and groceries.

She picked up a new suitcase for herself, packing for Europe right there in Arelmoor.
