Chapter 235
Catherine shook her head. “I know. I understand you completely. No need to apologize.”
But Vance remained sullen.
She pressed her lips together. “How about we book tickets? We can return together.”
“There’s no need,” he said, managing a small smile. “Go get some sleep.”
She shook her head. “If you’re unhappy, I can’t enjoy myself. There will be plenty of opportunities for trips. Let’s head home.”
He rubbed his temples and leaned back against the sofa, regarding her thoughtfully. “But that would be unfair to you, wouldn’t it?”
She offered a graceful smile. “Not at all. You know me better than that. I only want you to be happy and for things to go smoothly.”
He let out a deep sigh. “Go ahead and sleep. We can discuss it tomorrow.”
“Alright,” she agreed, yet she remained standing there.
“Go on. I’m okay. Don’t worry,” he encouraged.
She nodded. “When you speak to Rebecca, try to stay calm. Losing your temper will only push her further away.”
Bringing it up only intensified his scowl.
She quickly added, “Don’t worry too much. You’ve pampered her like royalty these past few years, so she’d inevitably develop some entitlement. When a woman is catered to without limits, she might start taking it for granted and throw occasional fits. But rest assured, she won’t stray too far.”
But the shadows on his face remained.
“She’ll definitely return,” she said, trying to soothe him. “She was a dancer, but her career options are limited outside of that world. She has no real skills and couldn’t even handle basic tasks. She has been given nothing but the finest. Without you, she couldn’t earn enough to afford even one of her handbags. How could she sustain herself? This is merely a temporary escapade. She’ll come back once she runs out of money.”
Her words provided some measure of reassurance. Indeed, Rebecca possessed few practical life skills; her daily routines had long depended on domestic help.
Venturing out on her own would prove challenging, and the hardships would teach her the consequences of such impulsiveness.
Observing the subtle shift in his demeanor, she pressed on. “Whatever you do, don’t let jealousy take
over just because she’s traveling with a man. She’s been so sheltered by you; she doesn’t understand

how dangerous people can be. If anything did happen, she was tricked. She’s the victim here.”
Through her seemingly supportive rhetoric, she succeeded in reigniting his indignation.
“Vance?” she called out deliberately, noting his prolonged silence.
His face softened slightly. “I understand. Go get some rest. I need a moment to compose myself.”
“Okay. I’ll leave you to it,” she said with an understanding smile.
She had stirred the pot sufficiently. Knowing when to stop was key, lest it arouse suspicion. Now one final nudge was still needed.
Lying in bed, she edited a long message and sent it to Aiden.
Staring at the chat with Rebecca, Vance suddenly received a message.
Aiden: [Still up? Is Rebecca causing trouble again?]
Aiden and Rebecca had never gotten along, so Vance had no intention of involving the group in her
matters.
Vance: [How did you find out?]
Aiden: [Cathy mentioned it. She is worried about you.]
Vance glanced at the woman lying in bed.
