Carrying that same aspiration, while the others went off to eat, Rebecca lingered in the rehearsal hall, searching for echoes of her former self.
It felt like standing in Josette’s practice room once again, but this time, she danced freely, guided by instinct, channeling the essence of that reborn phoenix through her body’s expressions.
Many moves she envisioned proved unattainable, but she persisted until the final pose. When she collapsed on the floor, sweat had already soaked her clothes.
Sparse but thunderous applause broke out in the expansive hall. She turned to see Desmond and Helia approaching, clapping enthusiastically.
“That was incredible! Were you dancing a piece about renewal?” Helia exclaimed, her eyes shining.
Rebecca got up and smiled shyly. “Yes. Seeing you guys rehearse sparked something in me.”
“It was truly remarkable!” Helia said with true admiration.
Even though most steps weren’t fully there yet, even though the hardest lifts and turns were impossible for Rebecca now, who wouldn’t be moved by a wounded phoenix fighting to take flight again?
Desmond’s eyes sparkled with equal enthusiasm, but his words were concise. “We’ll join you.”
For the next three hours, they danced together.
As they moved, Rebecca shared her concepts aloud. In turn, Helia executed the steps Rebecca couldn’t manage, and together with Desmond, they constructed the framework of her ideas.
Though it was only a short segment, a torrent of inspiration surged through her. There was so much more she wanted to convey.
“If we developed this into a full dance production, it would be impactful. Will you continue choreographing it?” Helia asked, sweating profusely.
Rebecca felt uncertain, unsure if she possessed that capability.
Desmond noticed the flicker of doubt in her eyes. “It’s getting late. Let’s call it a day. We’ve danced to our hearts’ content.”
She nodded and flashed a radiant smile. Indeed, the evening had been one of pure, unbridled fulfillment.
“Rebecca, I sent you a photo,” Helia said cheerfully as they were heading to their rooms. “It’s stunning!”
The image depicted a lift: Desmond supporting Rebecca elegantly, her form graceful, with her uninjured foot arched to perfection. It evoked the image of a phoenix in mid-ascent.
“Hey, you snuck a shot of me,” Desmond teased.
Outside the elevator, Helia looked back and chuckled, “Who was shooting you? It was Rebecca.”

Desmond looked down at Rebecca. “Look at your technique in that photo. Impeccable. That’s muscle memory ingrained in your very being.”
Rebecca smiled, seeing that Helia had captured the pinnacle of her performance. That was the most striking lift in the entire sequence.
“Remember your own words?” he added. “We dance out of love and for no other reason. If the passion is there, we pursue it without hesitation.”
She nodded, knowing he was encouraging her.
As the elevator reached her floor, she said earnestly, “I understand what you and Helia are getting at. I’ll give it serious thought.”
The doors opened, and she added, “Thank you both for joining me tonight. Sweet dreams.”
“Sweet dreams.” He waved with a smile.
