Chapter 249

“Oh…” The guard was perplexed.

Why was this man chatting with him? Did intoxication make people more loquacious?

Indeed, Vance seemed unusually talkative at that moment. While waiting for the ride, he confided, ” Grandma made a lot of dishes just for me.”

“Oh, that’s wonderful,” the guard responded politely.

“Yes, she loves me the most. I have to get there. Can’t keep her waiting.”

“Absolutely. It’s important to spend time with the elderly.”

“When I have some free time, I’m going to take her on a trip-to see the ocean.”

“You’re very devoted, sir.”

“Devoted?” Tears shimmered in Vance’s eyes. “Not at all. I’m terrible.”

The guard was lost for words. Fortunately, the car arrived just then.

“Sir, your ride is here.” He hastened to assist Vance into the vehicle, breathing a sigh of relief.

“Goodbye, and thank you,” Vance said from inside the car.

“You’re welcome, sir.” The guard saluted.

The car departed toward Syliaview. As the night progressed, it eventually halted at Josette’s house.

The gate was locked, and he knocked. “Grandma, it’s me, Vance! Please open the door. Are you home?”

There was no response, and he pounded harder. “Grandma, it’s my birthday. Aren’t you preparing a meal for me? Grandma, where have you gone? Are you abandoning me, too?”

Unable to hold himself up any longer, he leaned against the gate and slowly slid to the ground, his eyes closing.

In the enveloping darkness, it seemed as though the sky were filled with twinkling stars. His own grandmother, who had held his hand and raised him with love, smiled amid the starlight.

“Vance, live your life well. Take care of yourself and find true happiness,” she whispered. “I’m not truly gone; I’ve simply moved to a different place. I’ll become a star watching over you. Don’t cry, silly child.”

“Grandma…” he murmured, a tear tracing down his cheek. “Everyone has left me. You’re all gone. I

understand.”

The village chief passed by the house at six in the morning. After a night of rain, the ground was saturated and muddy.

He saw someone leaning against the gate, drenched and seated in a puddle. Initially assuming it was

Soren causing trouble again, he stepped closer and recognized the face.

Vance was asleep, and from the looks of it, he had been there overnight.

The village chief patted him on the shoulder. “Mr. Bradford, wake up.”

Vance roused groggily, his head pounding heavily. The sight of Elton Wilcox’s looming close startled him.

“Mr. Wilcox? I…” He blinked, wondering what was going on.

Elton was bewildered. “Mr. Bradford, why were you sleeping here? Did you forget your keys?”

Vance took in his surroundings, gradually piecing together the events. It was his birthday yesterday, Catherine and the guys had organized a celebration.

He must have overindulged, leading to a blackout, and somehow ended up at Josette’s place.

But he couldn’t admit to being so drunk that he had lost all recollection. “Yes. I thought I’d come by to tidy up her house.”

Elton regarded him skeptically. “But Josette has been away for quite some time now.”
