Terror finally hit Cecilia full force.
She couldn’t go back to the countryside; her father would kill them both. She wanted to study, get a good job, and take care of her mother.
She knelt and began massaging Catherine’s feet. But she had never done it before, nor did she know
how.
The ache in her chest pulsed painfully, and fear overcame her. She clenched her jaw in a desperate attempt to stop crying, yet the tears kept spilling, some falling onto Catherine’s feet.
Without warning, Catherine kicked her hard-right on the burned skin.
Cecilia cried out in pain.
“Your filthy tears got on my foot!” Catherine shrieked. “You little hussy! You and your mom are both worthless!”
Cecília curled on the floor, clutching her chest, too afraid to make another sound.
“Stop pretending and get back over here!” Catherine shouted.
Just as Cecilia tried to stand, the front door opened. Nancy had returned, and the scene in the room
struck her dumb.
Afraid her mother would worry, Cecilia quickly got up and forced a smile. “Mom.”
“What happened, Cecilia?” Nancy asked with concern.
She had never thought highly of Catherine, but with Rebecca gone, she couldn’t overstep the mark and confront that woman.
Cecilia caught Catherine’s glare and shivered. “I’m fine. I just tripped.”
“Tripped?” Nancy had already noticed the wet shirt and red skin around Cecilia’s collarbone. “What happened here?”
“Nothing, Mom.” Cecilia backed away, covering her chest.
Catherine burst out laughing. “Why don’t you tell her the truth? Go on.”
Nancy instantly caught on that Catherine had hurt her daughter. Her heart ached with worry and anger. ” What’s going on? Tell me!”
Cecilia shed tears, momentarily lost for words,
Catherine casually rested his feet on the coffee table. “She was getting me water and spilled it. How useless! She ended up burning herself. That’s all.”

Nancy checked Cecilia’s injury, her heart breaking at the sight. The skin on Cecilia’s chest was raw and peeling.
She gathered Cecilia in her arms and hurried to apply ointment. “I’m sorry I’m late. Let’s get you to the hospital.”
She picked up the girl and headed toward the door.
Catherine taunted, “You call yourself a servant? A proper one would greet the guests. A guard dog is better than you.”
Nancy shot Catherine a glare but said nothing. Just as she reached for the doorknob, the door swung open from the outside.
Vance had come back.
