Chapter 283

Rebecca vividly described how the troupe had celebrated her birthday in the theater.
Josette’s eyes went wide. “Wow, a three-layer cake? You are a fortunate child, surrounded by so much
love!”
“That’s right,” Rebecca said, her smile glowing from the inside out. “I really am incredibly happy right now.
She went on to ask Josette about various aspects of her life, and Josette seemed to be doing well. They chatted for quite some time, sharing stories and laughter.
Eventually, Josette considerately reminded her to sleep. Sharp as ever, she had calculated the time difference, knowing it was late where Rebecca was.
“Okay. Sweet dreams, Grandma,” Rebecca said, ending the call.
Just like that, her birthday had gone out with fireworks. It had been such a magical night that she was still buzzing with excitement, unable to fall asleep.
She had danced on a real stage in front of a real crowd. The scene kept playing in her mind.
The troupe had snapped photos of the birthday moment, sending them over to her back in the hotel. She scrolled through the pictures, grinning so hard her face hurt.
Jenny’s text popped up right then, packed with exclamation points: [Rebecca, you’ve recovered? You can dance again!]
She attached a clip of Rebecca’s solo, without Desmond in the frame.
Rebecca: [Where did you get this?]
Jenny sent a mischievous emoji and a screenshot of Vance’s post. It was a photo of her dancing, captioned simply: [Happy birthday to someone special.]
The post was barely minutes old, but the comments from their old high-school classmates were already exploding.
[Whoa! Rare for Vance to post something romantic.]
A whole row of identical jokes followed: [Rare for Vance to post something romantic.]
One classmate broke the pattern: [Happy birthday to Mrs. Bradford!]
Then another row piled on: [Happy birthday to Mrs. Bradford!]
They were all playful teasing, but one comment cut through the jokes.
Obadiah: [Doesn’t she have a name? Who is someone? Who is Mrs. Bradford? Can’t we just say happy birthday to Rebecca?]

Jenny’s and Vance’s common friends were their classmates, so she could only see their comments.
Jenny: [Did Vance track you down?]
Rebecca: [Yeah. No idea how.]
Jenny sent a “sighing” emoji: [I still don’t get what happened between you two. You guys seemed solid in high school. Long-term relationships aren’t easy. But I’m on your team all the way.”
Rebecca fired back a string of question marks: [Solid? Where did that come from?”]
They’d barely spoken five words to each other in high school. How had anyone thought they were close?
Jenny: [Weren’t you? Everyone whispered about your secret love.]
Rebecca: [Huh? We weren’t dating.]
She admitted to having a crush on Vance, but he was always cold. So, where did this rumor even come
from?
Back in high school, if any boy and girl showed signs of being in a relationship, their classmates would
immediately start teasing them.
Sometimes, if the teacher happened to mention their names together, the whole class would erupt in laughter. But she and Vance had never experienced anything like that.
Anyway, it was ancient history. She didn’t care what Vance thought anymore.
Just as she tried to shut the topic down, Jenny texted again: [Is this the only post he has ever made in his entire life?]
