Rebecca drifted through the entire day in a numb haze. Only then did she regain some clarity.
“It’s not your fault,” she reassured him. “You’ve helped a lot. We couldn’t thank you enough.”
Desmond gave a bitter smile, praying for Josette’s safety.
Gabriel clapped a hand on his shoulder. “We owe you and your family a big one. Really. Thank you for watching out for Rebecca all this month.”
Desmond swallowed the lump in his throat. How could he admit out loud that he hadn’t done it well?
That would make them feel bad.
“We’re going to find Josette together,” he said firmly.
He had called his dad, and the whole Schroeder network was lighting up.
Gabriel nodded. “She is gonna be fine. Now go get some rest.”
After Desmond headed off, Hugo drove Gabriel and Rebecca to the hotel they had reserved.
The rooms were two presidential suites on the top floor of Soliaridge’s most exclusive hotel. By then,
Rebecca was still in a trance.
She trailed Gabriel out of the elevator and followed him straight into the first suite without realizing it. He turned, saw her walking with her head down and nearly bumping into his back, and shook his head.
He glanced at Hugo. “Bring her luggage up too.”
With Rebecca this shaken, he wasn’t about to let her stay alone. He scanned the suite layout, the long
sectional sofa would work perfectly for him.
She snapped back to reality. “Our luggage is back?”
She remembered bolting off the plane the second the wheels touched down, forgetting baggage claim entirely. On any normal day, losing luggage would have been a crisis; today, Josette was missing, and her whole world had been ripped out from under her.
“They’re here,” Gabriel said calmly. “Hugo handled it.”
Rebecca turned to the man and forced a shaky smile. “Thank you, Hugo.”
Hugo bowed respectfully. “My pleasure. Please get some rest. I’ll leave now.”
She sank onto the deep velvet sofa, her mind racing in endless circles. Where was Josette? What had they done to her?
“Becky.” Gabriel crouched in front of her, noticing the dried tear tracks streaking her cheeks like pale salt lines. “Go take a bath and get your strength back. I’ll figure out a way to bring Josette back.”

She lifted her head numbly and met his eyes.
He gently ruffled her hair. “Go on.”
She nodded, pulled fresh clothes from her suitcase, and glanced at her phone. Still nothing.
Watching her shuffle away in dejection, Gabriel slipped into the adjoining room and made a call.
“Hugo, it’s me.” He looked down at the skyline. “There are some tasks for you.”
The conversation lasted about five minutes. When he finished and walked back into the living room, Rebecca’s phone rang on the sofa.
The screen flashed with Vance’s name.
Gabriel thought for a moment, then answered the call. “Hello? Who’s this?”
Silence stretched on the other end. Then a furious bark burst through the line, “Who the hell are you?”
Gabriel remained composed. “Looking for Becky?”
Vance roared with rage. “Becky? Who are you to call her that?”
“She can’t take the call right now. Do you have any news about Josette?”
“I don’t! And why can’t she…”
Gabriel hung up before he could finish. No real information? No point dragging it out. 7
