Five Years of Marriage to Mr. Bradford (by Koi Fish) novel Chapter 293

Chapter 293

“It was because of Rebecca.” Aiden laid it bare. “She’s out of the picture now, so it’ll go through.”

“That’s nonsense.” Vance frowned.

“I’m serious,” Aiden insisted. “Sometimes in business, you have to believe in metaphysical stuff. Rebecca is your bane. Ever since you married her, when has anything truly good happened?”

Vance brushed it off. “Come on. When did the company go public? Right after the wedding.”

“That’s different; you have to look at the timing. When things were flowing your way, you could overpower her negative energy,” Aiden quibbled. “But luck shifts. Once she started draining yours, all that was left was bad luck. I even consulted a psychic. That’s why everything’s gone sideways this year.”

When Vance remained skeptical, he continued, “As the saying goes, a virtuous wife is a crown to her husband. When she wasn’t fighting you, everything was fine. The second she started pushing back, your luck tanked. A harmonious home makes everything thrive. That’s ancient wisdom.”

“That’s enough. Keep an eye here. I have to step out.” Vance stood, ignoring whatever Aiden said next, and strode out while dialing his driver. “Did you check Syliaview? Is Josette back home? What about Soren’s place?”

Aiden, who had followed him out, caught every word. The second Vance disappeared, Aiden ducked back into the office and called Catherine.

“Vance seems to find out Rebecca’s Josette is missing. Watch what you say. Don’t slip up.”

“I know. Rebecca’s back, but it’s fine. I used a separate burner phone to handle everything, and I already ditched the SIM. We’re completely disconnected now.”

“Good. I was worried you’d accidentally say too much. Anyway, we know nothing. The key is making sure those people keep their mouths shut.”

“No problem, right? We’re doing a good deed here. The old lady was all alone in that unfamiliar place. We’re kind enough to tell her family to pick her up.”

“That’s true, but Vance is probably out looking for her by now. We just got ahead of him. Now that everyone’s in Soliaridge, it probably won’t be too hard for him to find her. We need to make sure the three idiots don’t rat them out. There is no need for you to get involved. I’ll handle it.”

“Aiden…” Catherine softened.

“Hmm? What’s wrong?”

Her voice trembled as if she might cry. “Thank you. In this whole world, you’re the only one who helps me with your whole heart-no strings, no expectations, nothing hidden.”

Aiden was touched. “Vance helps too.”

“Vance… He is wonderful, but Rebecca is constantly there between us. He doesn’t love her, but his sense of duty is too strong. He feels responsible for her and for her grandmother. Carrying that much weight, he can’t give me his whole heart.”

“He can’t help it…”

“I know. That’s part of why I love him. If he were the kind of man who walked away from responsibility, I wouldn’t fall for him. But loving him is hard. You’re the one who makes me feel truly seen.”
