Chapter 300
“Hey, don’t play dead.” Soren shoved her head roughly.
Josette was unresponsive. Her mouth was half-open, and her eyes were glazing over.
“Come on, you’re killing her.” Adeline fretted, grabbing his arm.
Soren stared at his mother on the bed. For half a second, something like hesitation flickered in his eyes, then it hardened again.
“Mom, don’t blame me,” he muttered. “If you had just signed the house over nice and easy, none of this would have happened.”
“We already have the will. Maybe we should just…” Adeline said tentatively.
“Shut up!” Soren snapped. “A will only works when someone’s dead. While she’s alive, there’s still a risk.”
“But…” Adeline looked at the fading woman, suddenly remembering the days after she gave birth.
Josette had cared for her, bringing chicken soup to her bedside.
“What? She died on her own,” Soren scowled. “It had nothing to do with us. We were even kind enough to bring her food.”
Adeline trembled all over, unable to convince herself.
Soren scorned at the mess covering Josette. “If you want to blame anyone, blame Rebecca. We could have taken you home and let you rest in peace. But she is searching for you everywhere. What if she manages to save you?”
Fresh tears streamed down Josette’s face, but she couldn’t utter a sound.
Soren thought for a moment and told Adeline, “She’ll be gone in a day or two. We can’t leave her here alone. They might find her and trace back to us. Stay here and watch her die, then take her back and clean her up. We’ll announce her death from a disease.”
“I-I can’t stay here,” she stammered. “W-Why don’t you stay here?”
He raised his fist. “Are you saying no? Useless!”
She ducked and ran for the door. “No, I’m not staying. She is your mother, not mine.”
Soren cursed, chasing after her, until they reached the door. The second she yanked it open, he grabbed her by the hair,
Then their faces went pale at the same time. A group of big men stood outside; among them were foreigners. The leader was someone they had never seen before.
“W-Who are you?” Soren let go of Adeline’s hair and trembled, thinking they were debt collectors.

He stammered, “I’ll pay you back. Every penny of it. I…”

Before he could finish, a car roared up and slammed to a stop. Rebecca jumped out and limped toward them fast, screaming, “Grandma…”
Clueless, Soren pointed at her. “That’s my daughter! Her husband is rich. Grab her, and you’ll get…”
The leader drove a fist straight into his jaw, cutting him short. Soren flew backward and crashed onto the ground.
Blood flooded his mouth. He spat, and two teeth came out with it.
Pure terror made him shake. “W-Who are you people?”
Gabriel didn’t even glance at him. At the same time, Rebecca rushed inside straight toward the broken bed.
The scene was worse than anything Gabriel had ever imagined. Josette lay there like a dried stick, motionless, oatmeal splattered across her face and body.
The moldy blanket and mattress were soaked with waste.
“Beat them up!” Gabriel barked, rage blazing in his eyes.
Animals like this deserved to die ten times over.
Hugo kept his head, reminding the men, “Keep them alive-just barely.”
He was 50 years old and had never seen such heartless cruelty. Even as an outsider, he couldn’t bear the
sight.
Rebecca’s heart broke at Josette’s miserable state. Biting back her pain, she tried to lift Josette.” Grandma, I’m so sorry. I came too late.”
Josette was barely conscious, clinging to the last thread of life. At the voice, her eyes cleared just a
fraction.
When she felt herself being moved, she realized that Rebecca had come. But she was filthy. How could
she let Rebecca touch her?
A sudden burst of strength came from nowhere. She muttered, “No, stay away. I’m dirty.”
Rebecca broke down. “No, you’re not. Not at all.”
“I’ve got her.” Gabriel bent down and gently lifted Josette into his arms.
Josette panicked. “Who is this? Put me down. I’m dirty.”
If she had any strength left, she would have fought and jumped down. But at that point, all that remained was fear. “Vance? Is that you? Put me down.”
Gabriel ignored her protest and strode toward the door. Rebecca followed, heart sinking. “Grandma, it’s…”

She tried to explain it was Kaitlyn’s son, Gabriel, when another voice cut through the air.
“Grandma, it’s me. I’m here!”
