Vance lunged forward, trying to take Josette from Gabriel’s arms. “I’ve got her. I’ll put her in my car.”
Gabriel cradled the frail woman closer and strode right past Vance, breaking into a near-run toward his
own vehicle.
“Rebecca…” Vance tried to reach her, but she paid him no attention.
The police cars arrived with sirens blaring.
Hugo stepped up to the officers, explaining, “The old lady is in critical condition. Let the kids get her to the hospital first. I’ve recorded a video of everything and will ride with you to the station. And that unfilial
son is still in there.”
Vance stood rooted at the warehouse entrance, torn in two directions at once. One second, he wanted to chase after Rebecca, but the next second, he spotted Soren and itched to beat the man senseless.
He spun in place, only to realize everyone else was moving with purpose. No one was paying him the slightest attention.
For the first time in his life, he felt like an irrelevant person.
The memory of Josette’s feeble state stabbed straight through his chest. When he saw Rebecca and that stranger loading her into the car, he jumped into his own vehicle and floored it after them toward the hospital.
Rebecca and Gabriel burst through the ER doors. Every nurse and waiting patient froze in horror.
The old woman in Gabriel’s arms looked like she had crawled out of a nightmare. They quickly rushed her into the resuscitation bay.
After days of nonstop terror and zero sleep, Rebecca collapsed onto the bench. Every ounce of strength had drained from her body.
Gabriel sat right beside her, gently pressing her head onto his shoulder. “It’s over now. Everything will be
fine.”
They had pulled Josette out, but until the doctors came out, no one knew how bad the damage really was. Rebecca’s heart stayed knotted tight,
Vance arrived just to see her leaning against Gabriel’s shoulder. His face turned thunderous, but he forced the rage down and walked over.
“How is Grandma?” he started.
She didn’t want to talk, while Gabriel ignored Vance completely, patting her back to provide comfort.
Vance sat down on her other side and gently took her hand, understanding the devastation in her bones. He had felt the same helpless dread when his own grandmother had been fighting for her life.

Rebecca kept her eyes closed, knowing who had sat down and held her hand.
Five years ago, those same hands had led her into marriage. Back then, she had been full of hope, believing they would weather every storm together.
Now she felt only bone-deep numbness, not even having the energy to pull away. She just wanted to sit in silence and wait for Josette to come out.
The lights in the waiting room flickered on; night had fallen. Gabriel’s people brought food, but Rebecca couldn’t stomach a bite.
He sighed softly and lifted a spoon of broth toward her lips. The second the smell hit her, she flashed back to Soren pouring oatmeal all over Josette’s face.
She shook her head violently, bolted to the trash can, and threw up everything she had left in her
stomach.
“Rebecca!” Both men called out at once and rushed to her side, offering water and tissues.
“She hates soup. Didn’t you know that?” Vance scolded, rubbing her back.
Gabriel let out a cold laugh. Vance had no clue what it meant, but he felt contempt and mocking.
They stared each other down when the ER room doors swung open. The doctor emerged with Josette on a gurney, unconscious and hooked to an IV.
Rebecca rushed forward, asking about the situation. The doctor’s face flushed with raw anger. “This is beyond cruel. These people aren’t human. Who the hell did this?”
She fell silent. Admitting it was her father felt too humiliating.
The doctor didn’t press for names; he was simply venting. Then he answered the question, “Extreme weakness and on the verge of circulatory collapse. One day later, and she couldn’t be saved.”
How much had Josette suffered? The words “circulatory collapse” nearly knocked Rebecca off her feet.
Gabriel steadied her, and they followed Josette to the private ward. Once there, he lifted Josette and put
her on the bed.
Josette felt weightless in his arms, like nothing more than a sheet of paper.
