Five Years of Marriage to Mr. Bradford (by Koi Fish) novel Chapter 302

Chapter 302

Vance tried to help but never quite found a way in. Even at that point, he had no idea who the man beside Rebecca was, where he had come from, or how they shared such effortless, wordless teamwork.

Rebecca had spent five years at his side without any real outside contact, so how had she grown this close to someone in just one month?

Rebecca’s mind was solely on Josette; she didn’t even notice him hovering there, let alone knowing his thoughts. Once Gabriel had Josette settled, she sat down beside the bed and stroked Josette’s thin, collapsed face.

Large drops of tears finally broke free.

“Reb…” Vance started toward her, desperate to pull her into his arms.

Gabriel beat him to it, slipping an arm around her shoulders and wiping her tears. “It’s okay. It’s all over.”

She shook her head, her heart twisting with pain. “Josette went through so much.”

“I know,” he murmured. “It hurts me too. But look on the bright side. We got her back, right? We’ll get her the best treatment, take her home, and nurse her back to health. She’s going to be okay.”

She nodded, sobbing quietly. “I know, but it hurts so much.”

“You’re not going anywhere to rest right now, are you?” he asked.

“No.” She would not leave Josette’s side for anything.

“Then pull yourself together. Eat something and rest, or else…”

“I know.” Her brows wrinkled. “She could wake up any minute. I won’t cry anymore, and I will eat. I can’t let her open her eyes and see me looking like this.”

“Tired of me nagging?” he chuckled.

“No,” she whispered. “I just feel like a kid again.”

She was afraid of burdening him. Even though she finally had a cousin to lean on, handling things alone

had drilled into her bones.

He felt a fresh wave of guilt. It was his fault for not paying much attention to his relatives back home. If he had known monsters like this existed, he would have come after them long ago.

“You get to be a kid in front of me,” he said softly. “Stay as one for as long as you want.”

Vance couldn’t see her expression, but those words burned. If they hadn’t been in a hospital room with Josette lying right there, he would have dragged the man outside and demanded, “Who do you think you are to say that?”

Under Gabriel’s steady comfort, she slowly calmed down. Her chaotic mind cleared a little, and she

asked, “How did you know where Josette was?”

When she forwarded the address to him, he was almost there. He didn’t bat an eyelid, just kept his smile. “I have my ways.”

Right then, his phone vibrated with a call from Hugo.

“I’ll take this,” he said, stepping out of the room.

Hugo reported that everything at the station was handled.

“Talk to a lawyer. Can we get Soren and his family charged? Does this qualify as elder abuse?” Gabriel wasn’t familiar with U.S. law.

Hugo gave a sarcastic laugh. “He actually wants us to pay

him.”

“What?” Gabriel found it funny.

“Says we injured him and demands compensation.”

“Is that so? Well then, we’ll just take care of it. We’ll cover all medical expenses. Once he’s healed, give him another round and treat him again after that. Just keep him alive instead of throwing him in prison. That would be too easy on him. Just beat him up, treat him, and keep that cycle going endlessly.”

“And the woman?”

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed slightly. This was the real answer to Rebecca’s earlier question-how he had known where Josette was.
