Catherine had no choice but to spill everything: how she had wired the money to Adeline, arranged Soren’s bail, and hinted they should go after Josette.

Eventually, she gave away where they were keeping Josette.

With the information, the man acted immediately. Just before leaving, he instructed his men, “Keep eyes on her. If even one word was a lie, feed her to the sharks in the sea or send her to a desolate, godforsaken place. Your choice.”

The light clicked off, and the basement plunged back into darkness. She crawled around desperately, slapping every switch she could find, but nothing worked.

The power had been cut off, and the pitch-black silence was suffocating. If they never came back, she would lose her mind long before she starved.

Finally, footsteps came again. She didn’t know how much time had passed or who it was.

All she could recall was the glint of a watch and the chilling aura that surrounded the man leading the group.

But she didn’t have time to think about that now. She crawled over, desperate. “Let me out! Did you find her? I only told them where the old woman was. I just wanted them to take her away so Vance would stop obsessing over her. I never told them to hurt her, I swear. Anything that happens to her is on the Perrys. It has nothing to do with me.”

She was terrified. If Josette died from torture, that man would surely make good on his threat and ship her off.

Once on that boat, being thrown to the sharks would be a mercy. Being sent to some godforsaken place was what really terrified her. It would be a nightmare, far worse than death.

She had never in her life prayed so hard for Josette to be okay.

“Please,” she begged, her voice cracking. “Did you find her? Is she all right? Just let me go. I never meant to hurt her. I just…”

“Take her!” Hugo ordered.

The bodyguards stuffed her into a burlap sack and carried her out of the basement.

At the hospital, Rebecca had finally eaten some food.

Vance sat nearby, peeling fruit. When she finished, he offered her the plate. “Some fruit?”

She turned her face away.

“Rebecca…” He started to say more, but his phone vibrated. He checked the caller ID, then relaxed a little.

“It’s Aiden. I’ll take this.”

He stepped to the window. “What’s up?”

“Cathy is missing!” Aiden sounded frantic.

Vance lowered his voice. “I’m at the hospital. Did you try her phone?”

“Straight to voicemail. Something is wrong. We should go look for her.”

“Could she be at the spa? Or getting a facial?”

“No. Trust me, my gut is screaming. We planned to meet today, but she never showed up. This has never happened before. What if someone is retaliating?” 1

Vance glanced at Josette lying in the bed. “All right. I’m on my way.”
