Rebecca barely left the house for the next few days. Her whole world narrowed to Josette.

Josette was improving steadily, though she was still fragile. It was better for her to stay at home and rest quietly.

Gabriel, meanwhile, had disappeared into a whirlwind of work. He went out before dawn and returned

home after dark.

Rebecca hardly saw him until the morning he took Josette for her visa interview. He apologized for his busy schedule, having no time to keep them company.

Josette brushed it off. “Work comes first. We’re fine, honey.”

He then brought up the banquet. “Feeling up for it? If you do, Hugo will send gowns and jewelry over for a try-on.”

She shook her head. “I’ll sit this one out. Becky, do you want to go and have some fun?”

Rebecca hesitated, guessing that since Gabriel was new, maybe he didn’t yet understand local etiquette. As host, he might need her there, but her leg was unsightly for a grand occasion like that.

After a beat, she nodded decisively. If he were asking, he wanted her beside him. She’d go.

Gabriel’s face brightened. “Perfect. I’ll tell Hugo to send the gown.”

He thought for a moment and added, “Uh, never mind. I’ll take you shopping tomorrow. Hugo’s taste in women’s clothing is questionable at best.” 1

She grinned and nodded, planning to drop by Derek’s studio.

In Vance’s office, Aiden and Lucas sat across the desk, talking through the upcoming Rossi Enterprises debut banquet.

“Every heavy hitter in Soliaridge will be attending,” Aiden exclaimed. “And we are on the list.”

Vance nodded, expressionless.

“Man, why the long face lately?” Lucas teased. “You look like a college kid who just got dumped by his first love.”

“It will get easier with time,” Aiden exhaled. “You’re just not used to it yet. Don’t overthink. The whole company is riding on you; this deal has to land.”

Vance took a deep breath. “I know.”

“Oh, about the guy you asked me to look into?” Aiden added. “He is Rebecca’s cousin, named Gabriel Perry, You know about her aunt living overseas, right? That’s her son. They must have crossed paths

while she was abroad, and he tagged along when she came back.”

The knot in Vance’s chest loosened. “What does he do for a living?”

“Hard to pin down. Barely any public footprint. Probably just some regular guy at an overseas firm.”

“But… He had serious security. Looked expensive.”

“Security isn’t that pricey. The lobby guys would jump for $500 a day. Easy hire when you’re scared for your life.”

Aiden believed these people were hired hands to rescue Rebecca’s grandmother.

Vance nodded, agreeing to the point. And the car that had picked Josette up on discharge day hadn’t been anything exotic.

“Okay,” he said, his shoulders dropping. “Then we go full throttle on Rossi. Starting with the banquet. No mistakes.”

“Oh, right,” Aiden said carefully. “Catherine wants to come, too.”

He paused, then sighed, “She’s terrified of setting you off these days. She doesn’t dare to ask you and comes to me instead. She wants to get out, meet some decent women, and have a life rather than hide in that apartment forever.” (1
