Chapter 321
Vance stood face-to-face with Josette again.
The woman who had once loved him more fiercely than anyone now regarded him with quiet, helpless.
sorrow. Rebecca and Gabriel stood on either side, steadying her.
“Grandma,” Vance croaked. “I came to pick you up from the hospital. Let’s go home.”
Josette was as gracious as ever, but now, all she could manage was a sigh.
“I’m so sorry,” he muttered. “I didn’t get there in time to save you.”
The thought of her suffering sent fresh pain through his chest.
“It wasn’t your fault,” she said softly, shaking her head.
“Then come home with me, please. Back to our place,” he pleaded, flicking a desperate glance at Rebecca.
She didn’t even acknowledge him, her face cold as frost. Together with Gabriel and the bodyguards, she helped Josette into the car.
The car pulled away smoothly, leaving Vance in the dust. He remained rooted to the spot for a long time.
Rebecca hadn’t expected Gabriel to prepare such a large house in such a short time. Josette was shocked as well, especially by the dozens of neatly uniformed bodyguards. She had never seen anything
like that.
She tugged at Gabriel’s sleeve. “Sweetheart, who are all these men?”
The little crease between her brows screamed nervousness, making him chuckle. “Grandma, relax. They’re good guys, just like me.”
Josette flushed, embarrassed. “That’s not what I meant. I only…”
She paused, unsure how to put it.
His grin widened. “Guess I did pretty well. Quite a few people count on me for their livelihoods, so they send people to keep me safe. If I go down, they lose their meals.”
She quickly stopped him. “Hey, don’t talk like that. Good stays, and bad goes away.”
He chuckled, leading them upstairs to choose bedrooms.
“We’ll stay for just a month,” Rebecca said quietly.
A mansion this size felt excessive.
“Even one day shouldn’t be thrown away,” he said, tapping her forehead lightly. “Life is too short, and we should never shortchange ourselves.”

She recalled her aimless five years, and that tap felt like a wake-up call.
In the end, she and Josette chose side-by-side rooms on the second floor. Each had enormous floor-to- ceiling windows that opened onto a curved balcony. A huge old sycamore stood just beyond the railing, its leaves thick and summer-green.
“This place is nice,” Josette marveled. “Never thought I’d live to see days like this.”
“Grandma,” Gabriel said softly, “every day from now on is going to be like this.”
His phone kept vibrating, but he ignored it.
“Go take care of whatever that is,” Rebecca urged. “Grandma and I can manage on our own.”
He did have pressing business. Now that Josette was home from the hospital, it was time to set up the
local office.
At that point, Hugo was planning a banquet to introduce Gabriel to Soliaridge’s power players.
“You and Grandma are both invited, if you feel like coming,” Gabriel said. “And I’ve already scheduled Grandma’s visa interview; I’ll take her myself. For the rest of the time, feel free to relax. If you ever leave the house, remember to take Piero with you.”
Piero was the head of security.
