Having said his piece, Vance no longer had the face to stay. He turned and left the venue quickly.
“Vance!” Catherine and Aiden chased after him, but he had already disappeared.
In the ballroom, the screen went dark. Hugo stepped forward to offer a polite apology, but no one cared much about the interruption.
After all, the star of the night was Gabriel. Everyone had come for him.
Rebecca looked at the main doors, muttering, “Some people love taking money that doesn’t belong to them. Maybe it’s time they pay it back.”
Gabriel nodded. “Agreed.”
Aiden and Catherine looked back at the brightly lit hall, unable to return.
Catherine’s eyes were swollen with tears. “I was really drunk that night. I couldn’t let it go.”
“I understand,” he replied. “You only wanted to get back together with Vance. We all wanted that. It was that greedy woman who refused to step aside.”
She continued to cry, and Aiden’s phone rang with a call from Sonia.
His temper flared because she hadn’t replied to his messages earlier. He rejected it, but she kept calling.
He ignored it altogether, then noticed Catherine’s eyes were already swollen from crying.
“Let’s go home,” he said. “There’s nothing worth staying for at this stupid party.”
As their car drove out of the parking lot, he received a message from Sonia.
It read: [Can you come to the hospital? My mom isn’t doing well.]
Awen sneered inwardly, “Thought you were so capable. In the end, you have to rely on me.”
He didn’t reply, driving straight toward Catherine’s place.
However, just a hundred yards down the road, another vehicle cut them off and stopped dead in front.
Aiden was about to get out and start yelling when several women stepped out of the car. They were the same group of women Catherine had been hanging out with earlier.
They surrounded the car and pounded on the windows aggressively. “Catherine, get the hell out!”
“W-What do you want?” Catherine shrank back, her voice shaking.
“Get out right now!” they demanded.
No matter how hard they pounded and shouted, Catherine stayed huddled inside while Aiden kept the car doors locked tight, pretending not to hear.

“Stop playing dead!”
“Open the door now before I call the police and report you for taking bribes!”
“Actually, this isn’t even bribery. This is straight-up fraud!”
Aiden cracked the window a little. “What are you talking about? When did she ever scam you?”
One of the women laughed coldly. “You told us you were Mr. Rossi’s old college friend, used your company’s name, and promised that once the deal went through, you’d look out for us. If that’s not scamming, what is?”
Another echoed, “Damn right! Hand over everything-every bag, every lipstick, and every meal you ate on our dime. Spit it all back out!”
Puzzled, Aiden turned to Catherine. The guilt on her face said it all.
“I thought the deal was secured. You know, business favors,” she muttered weakly.
“You call that business favor? Get out of the car right now! Or I’m smashing the windows!” One of the women slammed her palm hard against the glass.
Catherine nervously lowered her window a crack. A hand immediately shot through the gap, grabbed a fistful of her hair, and yanked hard.
She screamed in pain.
