But the woman had no intention of letting Catherine go. Instead, she yanked even harder.
Aiden roared, jumping out of the car to help, but another vehicle shot in from nowhere and screeched to a stop. Several men in black suits poured out, blocked Aiden’s path, and started beating him.
Aiden could barely protect himself. At the same time, the woman kept pulling Catherine’s hair while another reached inside, unlocked the door, and dragged her out of the car.
“Give our stuff back! Give our money back, you liar!” barked the woman. 1
A chaotic storm of punches and kicks rained down. Neither Aiden nor Catherine had any chance to fight back. In the whirlwind of violence, they couldn’t even tell who was hitting them.
The two groups came and went like a whirlwind. After venting their anger, they jumped back into their cars and sped away.
Just before leaving, one of the women shouted, “Remember to pay us back! Or we’ll come beat you again!
Aiden and Catherine lay sprawled on the ground, unable to get up.
Since graduating, Aiden had never experienced anything like this. He intended to call the police, but Catherine stopped him. “No, please don’t call them.”
Her hair was a wild mess, her face bruised, and her makeup had turned into a smeared disaster. Because her lips were so swollen, her words came out slurred. “If we call the police, I’ll get in even more
trouble.”
Besides scamming the women out of gifts and money, she had plenty of other dirty secrets. She didn’t dare to risk angering Gabriel. He could dig up her entire past and expose everything.
Aiden’s face was a swollen mess. His nose was bleeding, and his mouth tasted of blood. When he spat,
two teeth came out.
“Damn! Those bastards hit so hard! Don’t let me find out who they are!” he cursed, turning to Catherine.”
Are we just letting this go?”
She covered her bruised face and shook her head. “I don’t know what to do. I…”
“I know,” he sighed. “If the deal had gone through, it would have just been normal business favors. Taking a few gifts wouldn’t have mattered,”
“Aiden…” she sobbed. “You always know me by heart.”
“Let’s go,” he said, trying to stand, but his legs gave out,
He fell back down and started to curse again in the darkness.

In the ballroom, the banquet was nearing its end.
Aside from the small disturbance in the middle, it had been a successful evening for both hosts and guests. Even if someone wasn’t happy, in this kind of setting, they had to pretend they were.
After seeing off the guests, Gabriel and Rebecca prepared to leave.
Someone came looking for Hugo and quietly reported something. He nodded, walking over to Gabriel.
“Becky, get in the car first,” Gabriel said, opening the car door for her and closing it gently once she was
inside.
Rebecca watched through the window as Hugo spoke to Gabriel in a low voice. The driver had locked the windows, so she couldn’t hear anything.
The conversation was short, with Gabriel mostly listening. Then he got into the car and sat beside her.
Rebecca was full of questions. He chuckled, and she mimicked him.
“I know what you were talking about. Did you finish cleaning up?” she said.
“Can’t hide anything from you, can I?” he laughed. “You said that if someone took money or gifts that didn’t belong to them, they should pay it back. So, I had the creditors go collect what was theirs.”
There was no need for him to handle it personally. A few hints and provocations were enough to send the debt collectors straight to the targets.
He had simply sent a car and some men to make sure Aiden got properly handled. Of course, neither Aiden and Catherine nor the group of women knew who was behind it.
