“Really? Did I remember it wrong?” Lucas frowned, looking puzzled. “That’s impossible.”

“Let me check,” Aiden said, searching through the chat history and finding the screenshot.

He quickly deleted it, then handed the phone back. “No. There’s nothing.”

Lucas looked confused, but since Aiden said so, he must have his reasons. It was probably for Vance’s best interest, so Lucas just let it go.

“Maybe I mixed it up,” he muttered, staring at his phone.

Vance stood up to leave, and Aiden asked, “Where are you going?”

Vance wasn’t sure. In the past five years, he had never been eager to go home. Right after they got married, he had been terrified of facing Rebecca.

He feared her overwhelming, passionate love, and even more so, he feared facing her injured leg. The guilt and shame had weighed on him like a boulder, pressing down so heavily that he couldn’t even be

intimate with her.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to, but whenever he saw her injured leg, guilt would overwhelm him and make intimacy impossible.

It had become a vicious cycle. The more psychological pressure he felt, the less he could perform. Then the pressure grew greater.

He had even seen therapists about it, but nothing had helped. Over time, he grew more and more reluctant to return home, always finding excuses to stay out until late at night-hanging out with the guys, client dinners, but mostly, work.

He truly had been busy with work, often staying late at the office alone. But no matter how late it got, he always had a clear direction-home.

Whether out of duty or something deeper, going home every night had become as routine as his work.

The apartment was still there, but he no longer knew where to go when he left the office. He had always told himself that being good to Rebecca for the rest of his life was his responsibility.

He didn’t realize when it had stopped being just a duty. Without the woman who would light up at the mere sight of him, the apartment was no longer a home,

Going home had lost all meaning,

She had promised him that no matter how poor or rich, she would never leave. She had promised to leave a light on for him, no matter how late he returned.

He had believed that light would shine for him forever. That belief had pushed him to take her love for granted and eventually snuff it out.

For a moment, all kinds of thoughts rushed through his mind.

Aiden caught up with him, slinging an arm around his shoulders. “Come on. You’re single again anyway. Let’s go have some fun. Just the three of us.”

“Don’t count me in. Izzy’s pregnant. I need to be home for her.” Lucas gathered his things, ready to leave.

Aiden clicked his tongue. “You keep saying that. It’s not like you’re carrying the baby.”

Lucas grabbed his folder and walked out. “I’m not hanging around. I’ve got dinner waiting at home.”

Aiden ignored him and pulled Vance along.

“Let’s go.”

“Where to?”

Vance pulled his arm free. “I’m not going.”

“To have fun! Drinks with some girls at a bar.”

“You’re such a fake saint,” Aiden protested. “Back when you had Rebecca, you refused to go to places like that. Now that you’re divorced, you’re still saying no? What’s the point of making all this money if not to enjoy it? Or are you just going to sit and count your cash for fun?”
