“I don’t think there’s anything left for us to talk about,” Rebecca said evenly. “You don’t want a divorce? Fine. I’ll file a lawsuit. You have objections to the asset division? Fine. Let the court decide. We’ve already made everything crystal clear. What more is there to say?”

The man in front of her was like a total stranger. Where had the cold, distant man who always kept her at arm’s length, scrutinized her with critical eyes, and sided with outsiders gone?

“Why isn’t there anything to say?” Vance frowned, his eyes swirling with emotion. “You brought up divorce unilaterally. I’ve only ever been on the receiving end. You’ve never listened to what I think.”

She felt exhausted. “In five years of marriage, when have you ever listened to what I thought? Wasn’t the coldness you showed me also one-sided?”

His eyes dimmed, and his body seemed to deflate. But he quickly rallied again, as if afraid she would get in the car and leave.

“That’s why we need to talk properly, right?” he reasoned. “I don’t know what you’re thinking, and you don’t know what I’m thinking. We’ve both been making assumptions, so we need to communicate, don’t we?”

“No,” she refused, shaking her head lightly. “Communication only matters when two people still want to make the relationship work. I don’t want to be with you anymore, so there’s no need to communicate.”

“That’s not true.” Vance glanced at Gabriel, hoping he would give them privacy, but the man clearly had no intention of moving.

But he had to go on. If he didn’t speak now, who knew when he would see her again?

“I didn’t understand before. I was stupid. You’ve been rooted in my life, but I just ignored it. I…” he choked

His eyes grew hot, and his throat tightened,

“What exactly are you trying to say?” she sighed.

“I can’t live without you,” he croaked.

She let out a short, bitter laugh. “Things seem to take root in your heart pretty easily.”

He was momentarily stunned by her words.

“Five years ago, someone took root in your heart. When she left, she pulled those roots out, and I saw how devastated you were. Now, are you going to be devastated again?” she said coldly. “How many times does your deep love get to appear in one lifetime? If it happens too often, it stops being worth anything.”

“No, that time wasn’t…” He tried to explain, but his phone rang.

It was Aiden, and he didn’t answer.

Then Aiden’s message came through. The content was visible on the lock screen, and his face turned pale in an instant.

Aiden called again, and he answered with a trembling hand. “Hello?”

“Did you see the message I sent? Get over here right now!” Aiden shouted.

“I saw it.” Vance sounded like his soul had been drained. “I know.”

After hanging up, he looked at Rebecca again. The swirling emotions in his eyes had been replaced by boundless pain. He opened his mouth, but no words came out.

She had already said everything she needed to say. Seeing the drastic change in his demeanor, she had no desire to continue.

She opened the car door. “Gabriel, let’s go.”

Vance didn’t try to stop her again. The words he hadn’t finished remained unsaid.

Gabriel stood outside the car, looking at him with contempt. “Why did you stop talking? Did something more important than her come up again?”
