Chapter 393
Moments later, Vance’s phone rang.
It was Aiden calling.
“Hello?” He assumed Aiden was trying to invite him out again and was ready to refuse.
He never thought he’d one day avoid going out and just want to go home. It was ironic.
But Aiden was calling to ask him to comfort Catherine. “What did you do to make Cathy cry like this?”
In the background, Catherine’s soft sobbing could be heard.
Vance thought for a moment. It seemed to be because he hadn’t agreed to buy her a new house. He gave a bitter laugh and hung up.
“As long as I’m in your heart, it’s enough?” he muttered, never believing in that nonsense.
Back then, he had simply been willing to indulge her.
Five years ago, when Catherine left, his startup with Aiden and Lucas had hit a major setback. Years of hard work looked like they were about to go down the drain.
She had wanted to leave and had broken up with him. He wasn’t stupid; he understood why and had the self-awareness of not asking her to stay and suffer with him.
Later, he learned that she had gone abroad with a rich kid. He knew all of it.
That period of depression had been half because of the breakup and half because of the business failure.
He had hit the bottle, but not always out of despair. Most of the time, it had been to entertain clients and investors. On the night Rebecca saved him, he had been truly desperate.
He had hit wall after wall and lost all confidence, almost ready to give up, until Rebecca saved him, trading her leg for his second chance at life.
From that moment on, he carried another person’s future on his shoulders. He told himself not to give up whatsoever. Someone was waiting for him to take responsibility and provide for her.
Fate could be truly amazing. Right after that car accident, things suddenly turned around. When she was discharged from the hospital, his company began its miraculous recovery.
Then it took off like a rocket. His wealth grew exponentially. In five years, money became nothing more than numbers on a screen.
And that was when Catherine came back. He had faced her with resentment and unwillingness, thinking, “The person whom you once looked down on has now succeeded and is standing proudly right in front of you. How does that feel?”

To vent the grudge, he had even designed their wedding house according to her preferences.
At the time, the company had just started turning around and had some capital, but not an abundance. He had taken out a loan for that place.
He had thought, “See? The decoration you liked, the password you wanted… I gave them all to another girl. I can afford it now.”
He had carried that lingering resentment and enjoyed her admiration. There had been a childish
satisfaction in it.
The person who had abandoned him back then was now trying to please him. That grudge had finally been smoothed out, but along with it, the balance in his heart had tipped.
Just as Isabelle said, he had shamelessly enjoyed two relationships at once, indulging in that ambiguous state.
He reveled in Catherine’s admiration and, almost as an act of revenge against her, showered her with every indulgence and pampering, as if to prove to his former, broken self the extent of his current
success.
