Chapter 394
Vance had never really thought about whether he loved Catherine or not.
He had simply wanted to prove his power and influence-to show that if he wanted, he could spoil a woman to the extreme. But in the process, he had hurt Rebecca.
He hadn’t thought that much. He had simply lost himself in his interactions with Catherine while explaining to Rebecca that he was only grateful to Catherine for volunteering to help his grandmother back then and that nothing was going on between them.
That excuse probably sounded reasonable enough. He needed a noble-sounding reason to support his dark and despicable motives, but by and by, he truly believed it.
He could do anything for Catherine, but he would not betray Rebecca.
By that, he meant he would never cross the physical line. Yet Isabelle said emotional betrayal was still betrayal.
“Is it? Have I emotionally betrayed Rebecca?” he muttered, not sure of the answer.
As for Catherine… He couldn’t tell whether it was unresolved resentment or actual love. The one thing he had been certain of was that Rebecca loved him deeply.
It had made him believe that no matter how much his inner balance tilted, she would always stay and would not change faith.
But then, on the island, when Catherine had hugged him from behind, he had realized one thing. He could never cross any real line because his heart belonged to Rebecca. (1)
That night, he had wanted to see her more than ever. But when he rushed home, she was gone.
It turned out she could leave. All the glory and boundless wealth could not trap her. Of course, she didn’t care about money.
Back in the day, she had lived frugally, yet she had been afraid he didn’t have enough money. She’d save a few dollars to pay him for tutoring. How could someone like that care about money?
He had been wrong and arrogant for too long. He had forgotten the road he had walked on and had neglected the most important person.
Ironically, he realized it only after losing her. Before that? Everything else had come first.
Work had come first because he needed to make money, grow the business, and support her for a lifetime.
His pride had come first because he couldn’t lose face in front of Catherine. He had forced Rebecca to apologize even when she wasn’t at fault.
His thinking had been simple. Even if he wronged her, it didn’t matter. She loved him so much that she

would forgive him no matter what. He just needed to go home and coax her a little.
For so many times, he had taken her forgiveness for granted and kept choosing Catherine over her. Unfortunately, she wouldn’t forgive him forever. She wouldn’t wait for him forever.
His phone rang, interrupting his thoughts. He looked down and saw Jenny’s name flashing on the screen.
“What’s up?” she said. “Just say it over the phone. I have to work overtime and can’t go out for dinner.”
“O-kay…” He sounded disappointed. “Never mind.”
He simply had nowhere to go and wanted to talk about the past with someone.
“Oh, right. Do you still remember Darren Horton?”
“I do.”
It wasn’t a name that brought pleasant memories.
“He’s gone.”
“You mean…”
“Passed away. A long time ago. In another country,” Jenny sighed. “It was an accident. Just don’t tell Rebecca.”
