Chapter 461
Rebecca glanced at him and couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “Aren’t you getting in the car? Planning to stand out here and freeze?”
“Huh?” Desmond blinked, still processing.
“Are you really gonna spend Christmas Eve all by yourself?” she teased.
“No… I… uh… I really…” He paced back and forth before snapping out of it. “Oh, right! Hang on! I need to grab the gift!”
He had anticipated this, knowing Gabriel would pick her up for Christmas. He had dreamed about her inviting him along, even getting the perfect gift ready.
When he bounced back out, however, he spotted someone else standing by the car. It was none other than Vance, who had been gone for a couple of days.
He wondered, “What is this guy doing here? He isn’t seriously expecting to tag along, is he? Gabriel would never allow that.”
Vance had come to deliver a gift for Rebecca. He knew that she wouldn’t spend Christmas Eve alone and that he would never be welcome in Gabriel’s home, so he had decided to hand it over right here on Christmas Eve-only to run straight into Gabriel picking her up.
Facing Gabriel’s glare, he forced a smile and held out the gift box. “Merry Christmas.”
Rebecca didn’t take it. Instead, she warned him, “There’s something I’ve been meaning to say. A decent ex should stay dead and buried! Not popping up like a zombie every couple of weeks.”
His face paled. “I just wanted to wish you well.”
“I don’t need your gifts or best wishes,” she said bluntly. The best thing you can do for me is stay gone. Do you understand?”
His hand holding the gift box dropped, his eyes dimming.
“Seriously, what are you even doing here with gifts? Is it really for my sake? No. It’s for yourself. You feel guilty, so you keep showing up to apologize, hoping I’ll forgive you.” She pointed out.
After a pause, she added, “Catherine betrayed you, and suddenly you realized you’d loved the wrong person. So, now you want to come back to what you think was your first love, but I don’t love you anymore. Your constant pestering only annoys me. Do you get it?”
She got it all out, confident that she had herself crystal clear and that he would stop bothering her after this.
She looked up and spotted Desmond standing a short distance away. “Desmond, hurry up! We’re waiting on you!”
“Coming!” Desmond bounded over, deliberately shouldering Vance aside as he climbed into the car.
The force nearly knocked Vance off his feet. That was intentional, making him burn with resentment, but all he could do was stand there and watch them leave like a family.
He stayed rooted to the spot as the wind whipped across his face. It was colder than any winter he had ever known.
In the rearview mirror, Rebecca watched him and muttered, “How long has he been hanging around here? Like ten days now? Why hasn’t he gone home? Did his company go under or something?”

Gabriel chuckled, and her eyes widened. “Wait, really?”
“Would you care if it did?” he asked back.
“Not even a little,” she replied without hesitation. “I mean what I said. He and I are just strangers now. Whether he thrives or crashes has nothing to do with me.”
