Rebecca turned decisively and went back inside. Desmond gave Vance one last contemptuous look.

She urged, “Come back home. What are you dawdling for?”

Vance lay on the ground, watching helplessly as the door closed.

“Come back home…” He had never imagined she would say it to anyone else.

Her past words echoed in his mind.

“Vance, when are you coming home?”

“Vance, I think I’ll head home first.”

“Vance, can you bring something when you come home?”

“Vance, let me know before you come home.”

“Vance, come home.”

Once, that phrase had belonged only to the two of them. They used to have a home, but now she was telling another man to come home.

His heart felt like it was ripped apart by sharp claws. The pain was unbearable. So, this was what heartbreak felt like.

She must have felt this way, too, back when he kept ignoring her because of Catherine.

“I’m sorry, Rebecca. I was wrong,” he murmured.

He didn’t know how long he sat there in the snow. Only when the smell of baking bread drifted out from the house did he realize his clothes had been soaked through.

The snowman had already melted away. She had wanted to build one for so many years.

Back in high school, whenever it snowed, the students would go crazy, running around the playground and having snowball fights. The mischievous boys would even stuff snow down the girls’ collars.

She would just sit quietly by the window, watching the snowflakes fall. The others would invite her to play in the snow, but she would just shake her head, saying the snow was too light.

When would Soliaridge ever get heavy snow so they could build snowmen? Unfortunately, the snow in that city was always just a thin layer that melted before school even let out.

He murmured, “We’ve finally got heavy snow, but you don’t want my snowman anymore.”

The smell of baking bread was Desmond’s doing. Rebecca didn’t like crusty European bread, so he baked soft, fluffy loaves that felt like clouds.

Naturally, he stayed for lunch. In the afternoon, they watched a show together. Halfway through, Rebecca

fell asleep. He gently covered her with a blanket, then went to prepare dinner.

For dinner, they didn’t drink. Afterward, they continued to watch the show they hadn’t finished. That night, she didn’t ask him to leave.

After she fell asleep, Desmond kept watching TV in the living room and eventually dozed off.

The next day, he made breakfast again and went with her to the clinic.

The days passed like this. He even decorated both houses for Christmas. It continued until the day before Christmas Eve, when Gabriel called to say he was coming to pick her up for the holiday.

Since she couldn’t miss her daily rehabilitation, Gabriel planned to pick her up on Christmas Eve. Rebecca told him to come at noon, right after her rehab session ended.

Desmond accompanied her to the clinic. When they returned, she packed the gifts she had prepared for her family. Gabriel arrived shortly after.

Desmond was still in her house, looking like a lost puppy.

Rebecca was going home with Gabriel for the holiday, while his only relative there, Denise, had already gone back to the States. That meant he would be spending Christmas alone.

The festive atmosphere was intense. Every house was lively and warm with family gatherings. Being alone made him feel miserable.

Gabriel loaded Rebecca’s things into the car, then came back to help her in.

Desmond stood at the gate, his eyes watery. “Rebecca, Merry Christmas!”
