Chapter 463
In the end, Kaitlyn got eased out, and a while later, Gabriel came out as well.
“Guess I was in the way,” he chuckled.
He didn’t mind testing the young man a bit. The result? In a single afternoon, Desmond put together an absolute feast, including desserts and soup.
“Is your family in the restaurant business?” Kaitlyn gasped.
“No. I just love cooking,” Desmond replied with a grin.
“In all my decades, I’ve never sat down to a dinner this incredible!” Kaitlyn exclaimed.
It was probably an exaggeration, but it showed just how impressive the spread was.
“Thank you, Aunt Kaitlyn,” he responded smoothly with a beam.
Every time he used that appellation, Rebecca would glance at him. He pretended not to notice, but his ears slowly turned pink.
This was the kind of warm family reunion night Rebecca had always dreamed of. As a kid, she had watched holiday commercials on TV-bright colors, smiling faces, laughing families.
It always looked so warm. But in her first 20-plus years, she had never experienced anything like it.
Before marriage, her parents would come home and turn the place upside down, especially while her grandfather was alive. The shouting, scolding, and insults aimed at Josette and her had been relentless.
She had felt like hiding in a dark corner, peeking at other people’s happiness.
After marriage, she thought she would finally have her own warm home with bright lights and joyful holidays. Yet across five years and ten New Year’s Eves and Christmases, Vance was either away or shut in his study.
He only came out for meals, then disappeared again. The more she tried to create a lively atmosphere, the more he withdrew. Only at Josette’s did it feel slightly better, but even then, he was stiff and distracted.
Tonight was completely different.
The five of them sat in a bright, spacious dining room with the fireplace roaring and the heating turned up high. One bowl of hot soup was enough to make one break into a light sweat. Every face wore a genuine, happy smile— just like the ones on TV.
There were only five people, yet the laughter and conversation never stopped all evening. Desmond’s easygoing personality let him blend in seamlessly. He kept sharing funny stories, and Josette laughed until her cheeks hurt.
That was more than enough.
She told herself that this was what happiness looked like, made tangible at last.
After the feast, no one wanted to disperse. They stayed gathered around the fireplace, chatting. Outside, heavy snow fell, the flakes whispering against the windows. Inside, it was as warm as spring, the firewood crackling in the hearth.
She leaned against Josette, tipsy, while Desmond sat across from her. When the mood struck, he went over and played a piece on the piano.

Rebecca fell asleep to the music, still curled in Josette’s arms, smiling even in her dreams.
