Chapter 481
Sometimes, the way people encountered each other was truly fascinating.
The bakery had been open for quite some time, yet before that day at the clinic, Rebecca had never once run into Vance. After that encounter, however, she began seeing him from time to time.
Sometimes, she spotted him and Anna shopping together at the supermarket. Other times, she saw him out delivering cakes. He’d only nod at her or not seem to notice her at all.
He had really done it. He had done exactly what she had asked. If they met again, they would treat each other like strangers passing on the street.
Even his appearance had changed dramatically. In the past, he had always worn sharp suits, every detail perfect, his hair styled so rigidly that not a single strand was out of place.
That formal attire and stiff hairstyle had been like armor, making him look detached and unapproachable. His gaze had always been sharp and icy.
Now he had shed that armor, wearing simple white T-shirts instead. On cooler, rainy days, he would add a thin cashmere cardigan. Even when every button was neatly fastened, the overall effect made him look softer.
His short bangs were allowed to fall naturally across his forehead, and his eyes had grown gentle and calm.
Who could connect this man, gentle as the sunlight mixed with the scent of lilies, with the former CEO who used to stride through the bustling CBD towers of Soliaridge like a force of nature?
That night, the troupe gave their first formal performance of one chapter from Rebecca’s drama Classic of Mountains and Seas in the school auditorium. It was named “Deer Cry”.
She had choreographed it herself. Desmond was the male lead, while she took a supporting role.
The performance was a great success, and they received countless bouquets. During the curtain call, Rebecca spotted many familiar faces in the audience.
A large group from the clinic had come, including the staff and patients, along with neighbors from the area. Even Vance and Anna were sitting among them.
When the show ended, the clinic staff and the patients came forward to applaud and cheer for them. Vance and Anna rose with the rest of the crowd, then walked out of the auditorium.
As they left, Vance turned back to take her hand.
Many flower baskets had been delivered and were now lined up at the entrance. They were from the clinic, the school, Denise, and the teachers.
Rebecca divided the flowers among the audience members. The elderly woman had also shown up, holding a red rose. She praised their dancing and insisted on taking a photo with the male and female leads.
Rebecca acted as photographer, snapping a picture of the old lady, Desmond, and the female lead, Willow Stanton.
Right after, Desmond quickly pulled Rebecca over. “This is our choreographer. She’s the most talented person in our troupe. You have to take a picture with her, too.”
The old lady laughed. “Of course, I know Becky. She still owes me that apple pie she promised. I ordered one from the bakery as a gift to celebrate your successful performance.”
The insulated bag she carried had the Cookie House logo on it. The custom apple pie had come from Vance’s shop.

Inside, the card read: [Wish you a successful performance!]
It was handwritten in familiar script.
“I asked Robert’s son to write it in American. Did he get it right? I can’t read English,” the old lady said.
“It’s perfect. Thank you,” Rebecca replied.
She handed the apple pie to Willow and asked the latter to share it with the whole cast. When she turned around, the card had already been torn to pieces by Desmond.
She caught a glimpse of him dropping the scraps into the trash can.
“Rebecca, let’s go home!” Desmond called out with a bright smile, as if nothing had happened.
“Okay.” Rebecca pretended she hadn’t noticed and told the cast, “Everyone worked hard tonight. Go home and take a good rest. We’ll meet tomorrow and the day after to review tonight’s performance and make improvements.
་་
She planned to take the troupe to the Edinburgh Festival in August and let the whole world know about American traditional dance.
If “Deer Cry” succeeded, she would continue choreographing the rest of the series.
