Rebecca wondered who these people were, what they wanted, and if this was human trafficking For a moment, she didn’t know what to do.
She suspected she was in the cargo hold because she could hear rats squeaking. And there was the sound of waves.
Fear crept over her as she thought about the ship leaving the shore and being surrounded by the wast pitch-black sea. She was terrified of the deep sea and had never been this afraid before.
Curled inside the box, she kicked hard with her bound feet, hoping to create an opening so she could ger
Out
But that was nearly impossible.
Just as she gritted her teeth and kept trying, someone suddenly knocked on the outside of the box. She froze and listened carefully.
Yes, someone was knocking. She didn’t know if it was one of the kidnappers, so she stopped moving
The person outside kept knocking and asked, is someone inside?”
The voice sounded familiar. But she couldn’t believe it. How could he be here?
“Is someone inside the box? the person asked again.
It really sounded like him.
She decided to take the risk, kicking the box with her foot. It was better to sit there waiting for death.
“Rebecca? If it’s you, kick three times!” he said.
Now she confirmed it was Vance.
How was he here? But there was no time to wonder. Getting out was the priority.
She kicked the box hard three times. He was already prying the box open from the outside. Hearing the
three kicks, he worked even faster.
After several sharp cracking sounds, the lid was lifted.
“Rebecca?” He pulled off the sack covering her and lifted her out.
She was shaking all over, unable to hide her fear, not after drifting in the dark cargo hold with rats for so long and being surrounded by the rolling waves. She had always been afraid of the sea.
“It really is you!” Vance pulled her into his arms. “Come on, let’s get out of here!”
“No” She clutched his clothes, her hands shaking. “I don’t know how many people there are or why they

kidnapped me. We don’t know what’s waiting outside.”
His face darkened, but she couldn’t see it in the dim cargo hold.
“I know,” he said. “I’ll take you up. It’s going to be okay.”
“What do you know?” Her voice trembled with uncertainty.
“I’ll explain once we’re up. It’s too dark down here.”
Vance carried her up to the deck. The sudden open space made her shiver.
They were out at sea. The wind was strong. Everything around them was pitch black, and the ship was rocking.
She didn’t know what to hold onto, so she simply sat down on the deck. She needed something that felt
like solid ground.
But even sitting didn’t help. The ship kept rising and falling. Thinking about the two kidnappers made her
even more anxious.
“How did you end up here? How did you find me? What about the two men who kidnapped me? What’s the situation now?” she asked, feeling lost.
The sound of the waves only made her more afraid.
“Don’t get mad if I tell you,” he said.
She shook her head. Right now, anger was the last thing on her mind.
The dark sea felt like a giant beast. The howling wind sounded as if it wanted to swallow them both.
“My phone still has location sharing with yours,” he said. 1
She paused, realizing she hadn’t changed her phone. She had forgotten about it.
“Nancy noticed you didn’t come home and got worried. She reported it to Hugo, and he asked everyone who was at the dinner. I checked your location.”
