Chapter 500
“You’ll only get angrier il tell you,” Vance muttered.
Rebecca pointed at herself. “I’m already this angry. Just tell me the truth! At least, I’ll die knowing the whole story.”
He gave a bitter smile and opened the app again, pointing to a device labeled “V”.
“It’s a phone I once bought for her. She switched to a new one and stopped using it. But last night, it suddenly started moving.” he explained. “I called the police immediately. Then Hugo Ballard called, asking where you were. I suspected it was connected, so I followed the signal to the port, where I saw your shoe.”
Rebecca’s anger drained away, replaced by cold sarcasm.
“You really are sentimental. You couldn’t even unlink an old, discarded phone? What, keeping it makes you feel like Cathy is still with you?”
“No, it’s a work habit. Any small digital trace can serve as evidence for unpredictable situations in the future.”
“Whatever. I don’t care. We have nothing to do with each other anymore. Keep whoever you want linked. Just remove me. The thought that I still exist anywhere in your world makes me sick to my stomach.”
She waved it off and turned to leave. He watched her walk away in silence, then spotted Desmond standing up ahead.
The man had probably been waiting for a long time. She must have seen Desmond, too, because she suddenly broke into a run, racing straight toward him.
Desmond ran forward, scooped her up, kissed her forehead, and whispered something into her ear. Probably things like “Where have you been?” and “I was worried sick all night.”
Vance closed his eyes in dismay. Once, she had run to him the same way.
At 16, she would bounce, jump, or even cartwheel over to him with a bright smile. Later, after they married, she would wait at the apartment door, in the underground garage, or in the living room, always with a brilliant smile.
At first, she walked with a cane, then holding the wall, then with a slight limp-every step still aimed straight at him, full of enthusiasm and determination.
Yet he had never once given her such a warm, enthusiastic embrace.
Not at 16. Not ever.
When he opened his eyes again, they had already walked away. Perhaps Desmond was carrying her, or they were holding hands.
It no longer had anything to do with him.
Rebecca finally reached home.
Nancy breathed a huge sigh of relief. She had been worried sick about Rebecca’s disappearance. Her eyes glistened with happy tears at Rebecca’s safe return.
“Sorry for making you worry,” Rebecca said, then remembered something. “By the way, you still have Vance’s contact, right? You haven’t deleted it?”
Nancy faltered. “I… Well…”
“It’s fine,” Rebecca said quickly. “Who you stay in touch with is your business. I’m not going to force you. After all, he helped with Cecilia’s school enrollment, and you might still need him for that.”
Nancy felt even more guilty. She had almost called Rebecca “Madam” out of habit.

“It’s okay,” Rebecca reassured her. “I actually need you to do me a favor. Please send Vance 2,000 dollars and tell him it’s from me. He’ll know what it’s for. I’ll pay you back right away.”
