Chapter 499
“It only gives a general area, not precise tracking,” Vance explained, looking uncomfortable. “By the way, there’s something I need to tell you.”
“Give me the phone!” Rebecca demanded, holding out her hand.
He didn’t move, just looked at her. “Does it have to be like this?”
“Give it to me!” she repeated. “Don’t pull any tricks. A proper ex should disappear like they’re dead. It’s best for both of us. Don’t make Anna go through what I suffered.”
He sighed, finally placing the phone in her hand.
“Unlock it.” She held it up to his face.
But when she opened the tracking app, her phone wasn’t listed at all.
“What is this? You lied to me? It’s not even on the list. Don’t tell me you deleted it in the car!” She checked his Venmo next and saw her old card still linked. “Unlink this, too. Remove anything that still has me connected.”
She tossed the phone back to him. “Explain it! How did you know I was on that ship?”
He paused, then said quietly, “Because of Catherine.”
“I knew it!” Her suspicion hadn’t been wrong after all. This was indeed connected to him. “And you still lied to me?”
“You were upset last night. I was afraid telling you would make you even more unstable.”
“Enough! You’re doing it again! You always have excuses to defend her! She tried to poison you, and you still protect her? She’s a disaster that just won’t die! Why didn’t she finish the job? The world would have two fewer problems!”
It was always like this. Spending even a little time with him made her want to scream.
“Rebecca!” He grabbed her shoulders. “See? The second her name comes up, you lose all calm. I’m not protecting her. I already told the police everything. That’s how I reported the incident.”
“She was supposed to be serving her sentence. How did she get out and do this? What did she want by kidnapping me?” she yelled.
If they hadn’t rescued her, who knew what those men might have done?
“I’ve no idea. She has disappeared. That’s what I was trying to warn you about. Be careful these days. Avoid going out as much as you can, and if you do, take Gabriel’s bodyguards with you. Don’t go anywhere alone,” he said.
She yanked free of his grip. “Everything I said was true! Meeting you was the worst luck of my life! You really are my bane!”
“Rebecca, calm down.”
“I can’t! I was finally trying to live my new life, and now this happens. She was on house arrest because she was pregnant, right? Where’s the baby? Did she have some kind of miracle pregnancy that never ended? How did she escape supervision?”
“It’s complicated. She disappeared months ago. She used a miscarriage as an excuse to go to the hospital, then escaped from there. The pregnancy ended at that time. She has some criminal connections overseas, and it looks like those people came looking for her.”
“Then how did you find me? And how did you report the case?”
