Nancy watched Desmond send the message and panicked. She snatched the phone back and quickly unsent it.
Desmond’s face darkened. “Nancy, do you know who’s employing you now? Who’s paying your salary? Rebecca doesn’t say anything because she’s kind-hearted, but if you’re really on her side, you should cut all ties with this man. Don’t you know how much pain he caused her?”
Nancy’s face flushed red. “I… I know. I didn’t delete him before because of my child’s school transfer.”
“Even so, do you have to keep all the old chat history? Some of it goes back five years,” Desmond chided.
Nancy lowered her head. “I didn’t keep it on purpose. It all transferred over when I changed phones.”
“Then delete everything now. Both the chat history and the contact,” Desmond ordered, heading upstairs.
Nancy sighed, then sent Vance a message: [I’m sorry, sir. That last message wasn’t from me.]
Vance had already seen it before and knew exactly who had sent it, but he had no intention of replying.
It was normal to feel possessive when one loved another person. Back when he and Rebecca were together, he had strongly disliked Desmond, believing the younger man was coveting what belonged to him.
If love weren’t selfish, it wouldn’t be love.
He had lost control whenever Rebecca spent time with Desmond, yet he had never cared when Catherine was around other men.
A man nearly 30 years old understood plenty about love and the ways of the world. He had simply been blinded while in the middle of it. Only after stepping out did everything become clear, but by then, it was too late.
Right now, he was glad Desmond cared so much about Rebecca. Only love made someone that protective. He hoped Desmond would keep loving her like this.
He knew there was no chance left between him and Rebecca. They had drifted too far apart. So, he hoped someone would love her more than he had and cherish her better than he had.
“Desmond, don’t let her down. And don’t let me down either,” he muttered.
That was why, when Nancy apologized to him, he didn’t feel offended at all. He had been typing a reply, asking her to tell Rebecca that the old phone labeled “V” had never been something he chose to keep linked. It was Catherine who had insisted on
binding it.
But suddenly, it felt unnecessary to explain. He deleted the words one by one and simply replied: [I know It’s fine.)
Nancy: [Sir, I’m going to delete you. I’m sorry.]
He understood that Desmond must have said something to her.
Vance: (Sure, no problem. I’ll be heading to France soon anyway.]
Nancy: [Sir, I’m a woman, so I can empathize more with Rebecca. I did hate you for a while, but you helped Cecilia. I’m grateful for that. Thank you.]
Vance: [Actually, you don’t need to thank me. I’m a cold person. It was Rebecca who wanted to help you. Just delete me. I
Nancy tried to reply with “Okay”, but it couldn’t be sent. A red exclamation mark appeared.
She felt a quiet sadness in her heart for what had become of the once-married couple.
