Chapter 503

Rebecca had once told Nancy that she and Vance had known each other since they were 16-the kind of story people online called “from school uniforms to wedding dress”.
Rebecca had even injured her leg because of him.
Why had things turned out this way? She had loved him deeply, and he had clearly felt something, too.
For five years, Nancy had watched it all unfold day by day. Why couldn’t men resist temptation? She had thought Vance would be different, but in the end, all men were the same.
Rebecca was in the shower, and Desmond waited for her in the bedroom.
When she came out, her hair was wrapped in a towel. Her face was flushed from the hot water, and her eyes looked soft and dewy.
“Come here. I’ll blow-dry your hair,” he offered, having done that for her many times in France.
But then, he remembered a line from Vance’s old messages to Nancy: [Sometimes, Rebecca gets lazy and goes to sleep with her hair still damp. If I’m not back, make sure you dry it for her before letting her sleep.]
His fingers moved through her hair with a little more force, causing her to wince.
“My bad, did I hurt you?” he said quickly.
“What’s on your mind?” she asked.
Seeing him first thing that morning had touched her deeply.
He had been in Arelmoor when Hugo called. Then he jumped on the next flight immediately. At that time, she had been drifting at sea with no phone, out of contact for the whole night.
She could imagine how worried he must have been. Probably, he hadn’t slept, running through every terrible possibility.
“I’m sorry for making you worry,” she said, tilting her head up and reaching for his chin.
The man who was usually so careful about his appearance hadn’t even shaved that morning. He caught her hand, kissed it, and pulled her onto his lap.
“I’m the one who should be sorry,” he muttered. “You were in danger, and wasn’t there. I let you down.”
“It was not your fault. Nobody could have predicted something like that. Just seeing you waiting at my door already made me so happy.” She leaned her head on his shoulder. “Were you worried sick last night?”
“I was. Hugo called when I was a thousand miles away. I bought a ticket and flew straight here. They told me you’d been kidnapped. Even though the two guys were caught, you were still out on that ship. How could I stay calm? Not just me, Hugo and Nancy were also losing their minds, too. Nancy didn’t sleep all night either,” he sighed, thinking back. “You were unreachable, so I went outside to wait for you every half hour.”
“It was close, but I’m fine now,” she reassured him.
Last night was quite dangerous. If Vance and the police hadn’t gotten on the ship in time, she didn’t know what might have happened.
She wanted to tell Desmond everything she had gone through and how terrified she had been, but now she decided against it. There was no need to make him worry more. It was over.
She wrapped her arms around his neck. “It’s all in the past now”
“From now on, wherever you go, I have to go with you. Otherwise, I’m not letting you leave the house.” He gently pinched her
nose.
“Does that mean you’re turning into my accessory?” she laughed.
He grinned. “Yeah, a really big one. Hanging on to you for the rest of our lives. How does that sound?”
