Five Years of Marriage to Mr. Bradford (by Koi Fish) novel Chapter 506

Chapter 506

Desmond used to call her Becky or just Rebecca.

What had gotten into him today?

Even though “babe” was a common, cheesy nickname one heard everywhere online, when he said it to her, it still felt like biting into a molten chocolate lava cake. The sweet center melted and filled her heart with warmth.

“Why are you being so cute today?” Rebecca chuckled, her eyes curving.

“I’m serious!” he emphasized earnestly. “I really regret it. I shouldn’t have been such a coward in college. If I had tried harder back then, I might have had a chance.”

She fed him another spoonful of the sweet soup. “Don’t you have the perfect chance right now?”

“I just hate that we lost so much time. I missed the years that other people had. He drank the soup and only tasted bitterness.

She raised an eyebrow. “Then why don’t you talk about how the next few decades are all yours?”

His face lit up instantly. “Does that mean you’ll marry me? We’ll spend our whole lives together happily?”

“Aren’t you planning on that, too?” She rolled her eyes. “Were you just messing with me?”

“No, of course not! I just…” He put the stone back in the box and handed it to her. “I just wanted something special, like this.”

She picked up the stone and examined it carefully. “There are so many nice things in the world. Are you sure you want something this worthless?”

It was just a colored pebble. Back when she was younger and naïve, she had thought it would make a good gift. If she had been five years older, she never would have done something so childish,

Ten years had passed, and the stone had been worn smooth by time. The memory of Darren had also grown blurry, like looking through fogged-up glass. The lines of his face had softened and blurred with the years.

Since she was back, she felt she should visit Darren’s parents again. It was heartbreaking for the couple who had lost their only

child.

Desmond stared at the stone between her fingers. “I just want something one-of-a-kind.”

“Okay. I’ll think of something good.” She put the stone back in the box.

“Are you sure you still want to keep this?” He pointed at the box. “People say keeping mementos from the deceased isn’t lucky.”

“There’s a saying like that?” She didn’t believe it.

“Yeah. It feels kind of creepy.” He sounded a little unsure. “Why not just throw it away? It’s only a rock.”

It was a rock that another man had treasured.

Her heart tightened. “Be honest with me. You just don’t want me to keep it, right?”

“Well…” He smiled awkwardly, unable to deny it. “Think about it. Didn’t you feel unhappy when Vance kept something from his mistress?”

She felt a twinge of discomfort. Vance represented her painful past and wounds that had once bled freely. Desmond knew that, yet he was using it as an argument right now.

“How is that the same?” She tried to explain.

The relationship between Vance and Catherine was nothing like her relationship with Darren. They had only been ordinary classmates.

But when she saw Desmond’s stubborn, pitiful expression, she stopped herself from saying more. Instead, she pushed down the unconfortable feeling and tried to understand his perspective.

Still, throwing the stone away was out of the question.

“The stone was something Darren’s parents kept. I took it back, so I can’t just throw it away. I’ll find a proper way to handle it,” she said.
