Five Years of Marriage to Mr. Bradford (by Koi Fish) novel Chapter 508

Chapter 508

It really was a small world.

Rebecca never expected to run into Vance at this place.

The next morning, she packed her things, took the stone with her, and walked into the guesthouse lobby She saw Vance and Anna getting ready to head out as well.

Three bodyguards over six feet tall stood beside her. Vance nodded to her in greeting. At least, she had listened to one piece of advice.

Rebecca pretended she hadn’t seen him and walked straight out. But at the church gate, she saw him and Anna again.

“Are you here for the church, too?” Vance asked.

In a place like this, Rebecca didn’t want to argue with him. Besides, for some reason, her emotions felt complicated that day. She felt calm, yet a faint melancholy lingered.

Her eyes seemed to carry a soft ache, but at the same time, she felt wrapped in a strange warmth. It was a complex feeling. Maybe it was because of all the camphor trees planted around the church. They reminded her of those sunny high school afternoons.

Sunlight would filter through the leaves outside the classroom windows, turning them into flowing bits of gold. Cicadas would sing endlessly while students inside grew drowsy.

Memories were always warm but carried a touch of bitterness, especially when the person in those memories was no longer here.

Today belonged to Darren, so she decided not to pick a fight with Vance. She only hummed in response.

They walked in one after the other. She headed to the reception hall while he went to the main hall, acting like mere

acquaintances.

Vance paid his respects inside the hall, then went to request protective charms. Without much thought, he chose ones for safety and health. He no longer needed anything related to wealth at this stage of his life.

He slipped the charms into his pocket and turned to Anna. “Ready?”

She didn’t answer.

He smiled. “Come on, I’ll show you around the old architecture,”

There was a centuries-old camphor tree on the church grounds. As they passed it, they saw Rebecca with several priests.

His heart stirred. “I’ll go see what’s happening.”

Anna sat down on a stone bench to wait and drink some water as he walked straight over.

“What are they doing?” he asked one of Rebecca’s bodyguards.

He had arrived just in time to see Rebecca handing the stone to one of the priests. The bodyguard didn’t dare speak freely and looked at Rebecca.

She didn’t hide anything and told him what she planned to do. Something heavy struck Vance’s heart. He looked at the stone, his voice slightly shaky. “That’s good. Let it return to nature and be free like the wind.”

He stood beside her and stayed for the entire ceremony. In such a solemn setting, Rebecca completely ignored his presence. She watched the small stone disappear into the earth while the sutras were chanted.

She silently prayed, “Darren, may you be as free as the wind and go wherever you want. If there is a next life…”

She didn’t know what to wish for. She hadn’t known Darren that well.

So, she went on, “If there is a next life, may every path you walk be smooth and every wish you have come true.”

Once done, she saw that Vance had his eyes closed. He was praying for Darren as well, though she didn’t know what he wished for. He had known Darren better than she had.

After the ceremony, she thanked the priests again. Vance insisted on donating, and she didn’t object.

He and Darren had been close after all. He would offer his part, and she would offer hers.
