Chapter 510
This trip back home was short
Rebecca was scheduled to leave at the beginning of August. It felt like the excitement of returning had barely started, yet she was already thinking about when she would leave again.
She arranged to meet up with Jenny and visit the Hortons. To her surprise, when she stood in front of the Hortons’ house this time, the atmosphere was completely different from her previous visit
It wasn’t that the couple had fully moved on, but the house finally had life in it again. The yard was full of green. The flowers and vegetables were blooming with vitality.
The door opened, and a dog came running out, circling happily around their feet.
“Doodle, stop that.” Jocelyn picked up the dog and flashed a kind smile. “Did he scare you? This little guy is too energetic.”
“Not at all.” Rebecca shook her head. “He’s so cute. His name is Doodle? Doodle, look here. Give me your paw.”
It was a small breed, perfect for elderly people. It was easy to pick up and not too strong to walk on a leash.
“He’s pretty smart,” Jocelyn said. “Vance bought him for us so we’d have some company.”
It was Vance again. Why was he everywhere?
But this was one thing he had done right. The dog had probably brought some liveliness to the couple’s later years.
The couple invited the two women to sit down, poured tea, and cut fruit. They bustled around happily.
“You don’t have to trouble yourselves. Come sit and rest,” Rebecca and Jenny said at the same time.
Jocelyn smiled. “We’re resting all day long. It feels better to be busy.”
Andrew teased her, “You call this busy? You’ve been disappearing on me lately.”
“It’s not really being busy,” Jocelyn explained to Rebecca. “Before Vance went to France, he signed both my husband and me up for senior classes. He even came with us every time. But once he’s gone, Andrew keeps skipping. I’m the one still going.”
Rebecca was amused. Parents skipped school, too?
“He was never a good student even when he was young,” Jocelyn added playfully.
“If I didn’t cook and do all the housework every day, how would you have time to sing and dance?” Andrew countered.
Rebecca couldn’t help laughing, but then her heart ached.
The couple’s life had changed dramatically. They could laugh and bicker now. The house had gone from deathly silence to lively and warm. It was wonderful to see, yet it also felt like they were seeking joy from pain.
There was no other way. Life had to go on.
Rebecca looked around the house. The empty, desolate feeling was gone. Fresh flowers sat on the table, and one wall had been turned into a photo display filled with pictures of Darren – from when he was a baby and a little boy all the way to adulthood.
She looked at each photo. The blurry image she had carried in her mind, the one that had seemed hidden behind togged glass, gradually became clear again.
Along with it came all the memories of their youth-the laughter, the crazy fun, and the days of growing up.
And yet, he was gone.
Jocelyn invited them to stay for dinner, but they couldn’t bear to let the two elders work in the kitchen alone, so they went in to

They weren’t great at cooking, but they could at least assist.
They had just started when Vance’s voice came from outside the door. “Mr. and Mrs. Horton, did you make enough dinner?”
