Chapter 531
Backstage, only two people remained.
While removing her headdress and makeup, Rebecca tried to find the right words to begin.
Desmond spoke first, his voice low and haunting “You don’t love me at all.”
Her hand paused on her earring for a moment before she continued removing it.
“You didn’t even care that I disappeared,” he added.
She finally set the earring on the table and turned around. “I didn’t care about you? Why don’t you check your phone and see how many missed calls you have?”
He looked down. “You only wanted me back so I could finish the dance.”
“Can we stop acting like children?” she said seriously. “I can’t even imagine how someone who claims to love dance could disregard the stage, disregard everyone’s hard work, and just skip the performance without a single word. Do you realize how irresponsible that behavior was?”
“I didn’t skip it. I was there the whole time, waiting outside all afternoon,” he protested, sounding aggrieved. “If you had just called me one more time, I would have come running. But you didn’t. Our relationship isn’t even worth one extra call to you.”
She closed her eyes, feeling utterly exhausted. “During yesterday’s final rehearsal, I already gave up on you. Without a proper run-through, how could you possibly have performed?”
“How do you know I didn’t rehearse?” he countered. “Willow and I went up after everyone else left. We did our own run- through! I’ve been preparing for your show the entire time. You just wouldn’t coax me a little more. You didn’t trust that I would show up when it mattered most!”
She threw her hands up, feeling helpless. In truth, she had been hired of this for a long time. She didn’t even have the energy left to figure out how he had convinced Willow to skip with him.
“If this is your way of loving me, I’m sorry, but I can’t handle it. We should break up,” she said firmly, though her heart ached
She had survived a painful marriage and finally found the courage to love again. Back then, Desmond had truly shown her sincerity. She just hadn’t expected that sincerity to weigh so heavily.
His face went ashen. “You want to break up with me? I’m the only son in my family. For you, I gave up inheriting the fauly business and came all the way here to study abroad just to be with you. And now, you’re saying you want to break up?”
Rebecca’s heart twisted with pain. See? This was exactly what she had feared the most.
When Desmond had first decided to study abroad, she had asked him whether he was coming for himself or for her. If it were for her, she couldn’t bear the responsibility of someone else’s entire future.
