The accusation left Rebecca’s mind blank.
She and Vance were back together? Where on earth had Desmond gotten that idea?
“Aren’t you?” He looked heartbroken. “I stopped picking you up, and Vance stepped in, right? You two were touching each other right outside your yard.”
She understood then that he was talking about the night when she had nearly been attacked by the drunk men. Vance had taken her home and wiped the blood from her face, but to Desmond, it had become “touching each other.”
By this point, the false accusation no longer bothered her. A far more terrifying emotion had taken hold-fear.
His attention felt like a cold snake lurking in the shadows, secretly watching and monitoring her every move.
“The way you’re acting now terrifies me,” she said, then walked out of the dressing room.
He tried to follow, but in the doorway, Aaron and another bodyguard blocked his path.
“What are you doing?” Desmond glared. “I’m chasing my girlfriend! Get out of the way!”
“I’m sorry, but we’re just doing our job,” Aaron said evenly, standing ramrod straight. “You should stay away from Ms. Perry
from now on.”
“Did she order this? That’s impossible!”
“Mr. Rossi did.”
“Gabriel? No way! Why?”
Aaron knew the reason but would not speak out of turn. His duty was to follow orders, and right now, that meant staying close to Rebecca.
Gabriel had made it clear that they shouldn’t let her be out of their sight. Desmond couldn’t understand why Gabriel would interfere in what he saw as a simple quarrel.
Rebecca returned to the hotel and ran into someone in the lobby. Willow rushed over, looking hesitant.
Rebecca felt a pang of disappointment. She had placed high hopes on Willow without even preparing a solid understudy
“Coach…” Willow finally spoke, her face flushed. “Congratulations on the successful performance.”
Rebecca waited for her to continue.
Willow burned with shame. “I’m sorry. I made a terrible mistake.”
Her behavior had been outrageous, and there was probably no way back to the troupe. She had no nerve left to return
Still, she felt obliged to tell the truth so Rebecca would at least understand what kind of person Desmond really was
“It was Desmond who wanted to show you how important he and I were to the troupe,” she said honestly. “To make a point, hè, asked me to show up late and skip the rehearsal with him. Said you’d beg us to come back.”
“And you just listened to him?” Rebecca frowned, already knowing Desmond’s plan.
Still, she was shocked that Willow had gone along with it.
Willow lowered her head. “It was my vanity. He gave me three Hermes bags..
Rebecca understood perfectly.
