After the celebration party, Rebecca went back to Kaitlyn’s house with Gabriel.
Josette and Kaitlyn complained that she hadn’t told them she was performing. They would have gone to cheer her on in person.
Rebecca didn’t want Josette to worry about the problems within the troupe, so she simply said, “I wanted to surprise you.”
She would have many more opportunities to perform in the future anyway.
She had originally planned to give the troupe members a few days off, but to her surprise, they were all so motivated that the next day, their social media was filled with practice videos.
Rebecca felt inspired and decided not to slack off. After spending a short time with her family, she returned to the troupe.
She went back after dinner the following evening. By the time Aaron and the others dropped her off at the house near campus it was already dark.
Except for the soft glow of the streetlights, everything was quiet.
The moment she stepped out of the car, a soft click sounded, as if she had triggered a switch. Warm golden lights began to glow one by one across her front yard. Small ground lamps were arranged in the shape of a giant heart that filled the entire space.
In the center of the heart were hundreds of roses. Music started playing; it was the exact piece from their dance drama.
Desmond stood in the middle of the heart–shaped rose arrangement, wearing that familiar, deeply affectionate smile. His eyes were moist as he looked at her hopefully and held out a large bouquet of Scottish green roses.
“My female lead, congratulations on your successful performance,” he declared.
Rebecca stood frozen in place, staring at the extravagant scene and the man standing in the center of the roses. A wave of exhaustion washed over her like icy vines wrapping around her chest, squeezing until she could barely breathe.
She walked forward slowly, ignoring his outstretched hand and the roses at his feet and in his arms. Her gaze locked directly on his face. “Desmond, I already told you. We broke up.”
His smile froze for a split second. Then he acted as if he had heard a harmless joke. “Babe, are you still mad at me? See? I came to apologize and celebrate with you.”
“I’m not mad at you,” she interrupted in a flat tone. “This is a decision I made after careful thought. We’re done.”
He slowly lowered his hand, forcing a smile. “Don’t say things like that. I messed up, but it was because I love you so much. Let’s go inside and talk, okay?”
He moved to hug her as he always had, but she stepped back. At the same time, Aaron and the others closed in tightly around her, making it impossible for Desmond to approach.

She never expected him to say something like that. Her heart twisted painfully as she turned around. “Do you even hear yourself?”
He threw the bouquet to the ground, his eyes filled with agitation. “How much have I given up for you? I found the therapist for you, accompanied you to every rehab session, and helped you revise the rehab plan over and over.”
