Gabriel furrowed his brow, wondering why Vance was calling at a time like this, but he answered in the end. Vance’s voice came through the time. “G… Mr. Perry.”

Gabriel’s frown deepened. “What is that?”

“I’m sorry to call out of the blue,” Vance said, “but I want to confirm Rebecca’s condition. Is she okay?”

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. “How do you know something’s wrong?”

“I guessed,” Vance replied. “She hasn’t been to the clinic for several days, and she hasn’t shown up for rehearsal either. None of the dancers knows what’s going on. After such a successful performance, she should be even more passionate about practicing So, either she’s sick, or…”

“You know her pretty well, don’t you?” Gabriel asked, seeing a chance.

He had been mostly absent from Rebecca’s life growing up, so he knew his limitations.

Vance, on the other hand, had known her for over a decade despite his infidelity. They were classmates for three years and married for five years. Perhaps he had a way to reach her heart.

“I know her better than most,” Vance replied. “Better than Desmond, that’s for sure.”

Gabriel let out a mocking laugh. “You have the nerve to say that?”

Vance’s tone grew hesitant. “Yes, I was a jerk. But after I woke up, I’m still the one who understands her best. Is she broken? And not just ordinary heartbreak.”

He was so certain because Rebecca had always been resilient. Even growing up in that kind of family, she had been like a blade of grass in the gale–never truly broken. Even the deep wounds he had inflicted on her during their five years of marriage had never crushed her determination to move forward.

But now, because of Desmond, she had stopped dancing and going to rehab. That could only mean one thing: the hurt she was experiencing now was even worse than what he had done to her. He couldn’t even imagine what kind of damage could wound

Gabriel was silent for a moment. “She isn’t doing well right now. She is trapped in some kind of mental loop. No matter what we say, she won’t listen. Do you have any ideas?”

“A mental loop?” Vance wasn’t entirely sure what that meant. “What about a psychologist?”

“She refuses.”

“May I try?”

Met with Gabriel’s hesitation, Vance added quickly, “Don’t worry. I only want her to get better. I have no inappropriate intentions. You know I have a girlfriend now.”

Gabriel snorted. “A marriage certificate couldn’t stop you from cheating. You think a girlfriend will?”
