Vance hadn’t slept a wink all night, afraid of missing any signal from Kaitlyn or Gabriel. The gardenia -scented diffuser in Rebecca’s room had also been his suggestion.

Finally, it was working.

The next step was to get Rebecca out of her room during the day. She needed to move to exhaust her energy so she could sleep soundly at night.

They had originally wanted her to dance, but Gabriel refused, worried it might trigger painful memories.

Josette stepped in, peeking in from the doorway and quickly ducking back out.

“Grandma? Is something wrong?” Gabriel asked, then turned to Rebecca. “I’ll go check.”

He stepped out and returned a few minutes later.

“What’s wrong?”

“Oh. Grandma asked me how to write an apology letter.”

“Why does she need to apologize? To whom?”

“Well, today is supposed to be the day she and a few local families get together. Now she’s not going, so she wants to send over some desserts and write an apology letter.”

“Why isn’t she going?”

Rebecca knew how much she wanted Josette to have her own friends and enjoy life here in a foreign country.

He fell silent, but she understood immediately.

“Let her go ahead. I’ll be fine by myself.”

“It’s not because of you. She doesn’t feel completely comfortable going alone. My mother was supposed to go with her, but something urgent came up. And I have to go to the office. So, Grandma decided to let it pass.”

Rebecca realized right away that, with both Kaitlyn and Gabriel unavailable, Josette was simply worried about leaving her home

alone.

She thought about how, for the past several days, she had barely left the house and needed constant company. The three of them

[ had taken turns staying with her, putting so many things on hold.

“When is the gathering? I’ll go with her,” she said.

Gabriel pretended to be surprised. “Really? Grandina has a lot of tasks. She has to do the shopping in the morning, then cook and bake with her friends in the afternoon. That’s why she wanted to write an apology letter. Are you sure you can handle it?”

She nodded, “Yeah.”

He smiled, recalling Vance’s earlier suggestion about using her kindness. That day, Rebecca was so exhausted that her limbs

were sore.

In the morning, they went grocery shopping. Even with Aaron and the others accompanying them, she still had to walk everywhere. They bought so many different items that they practically toured the entire market multiple times.
