Chapter 549
Vance heard her out, then said “So you see.”
“What?” Rebecca blinked.
“You already know everything. Marriage isn’t repayment or something forced. It isn’t bondage but about living happily together.
**
She was stunned.
He stood up and walked over to her. “You need to believe in yourself. You’re right. No matter who you marry, it should be to live happily with that person. If not, either person has the right to end it. If the other person refuses, that’s their problem, not yours. You did nothing wrong.”
So, that was where he had been leading her all along.
“True love means wanting to give them the very best you have and still feeling it’s not enough. It’s not about keeping score and expecting repayment. That isn’t love. Don’t you agree?” His eyes gleamed in the night.
“That was how I used to talk in business: I invested so much money in you, and this is the result you gave me? But marriage isn’t business.”
Gabriel had said similar things before, but at the time, her mind had been too clouded. Now the words felt crystal clear.
“Vance,” she said, staring at a mosquito on his neck, “do you regret divorcing me and losing everything?”
He smiled faintly, saying nothing.
“What does that mean? You do regret it?” She frowned. “All this effort these past few days… was it to take everything back?”
He raised an eyebrow. “Would you give it back?”
“I’ll give you…” she slapped the mosquito on his neck, “a slap!”
She ran off immediately, looking at the dead mosquito under the light. The fat thing was now smeared across her hand, full of Vance’s blood.
He watched her retreating figure with a smile.
How could he regret it? Love always left one feeling like they hadn’t given enough. He only regretted not cherishing her. But unfortunately, there was no chance to start over.
His neck itched. He scratched it and felt a swelling bump.
“Rebecca, you will always be the best!” he shouted after her.
That night, Rebecca slept soundly again. She didn’t hear any sounds, not even Vance blowing on leaves.
The next morning, she woke early, but someone had woken even earlier. When she stepped out of the cabin, both Gabriel and Vance were already gone.
Kaitlyn had work at the company, so they couldn’t hide at the ranch forever. It was time to go back and face reality.
A piece of paper was pinned to the post with a thumbtack. On it was a quick sketch of a girl dancing, and below it a line of words: [ For the best girl.]
The date was written underneath, along with a little sun to show the weather was clear
