Chapter 553
In the end, Rebecca found asige frame and placed the sketch on her desk.
She gazed at the drawing of herself wearing practice clothes. Her hair was pulled into a high bun, and the expression in her eyes was captured perfectly.
She took a photo of the sketch and sent it to Jenny, asking the latter to guess who everyone was. Jenny screamed in excitement over the messages–a reaction that Rebecca had anticipated.
She chuckled, lay back in the lounge chair by the floor–to–ceiling windows, and continued to chat with Jenny.
Vance’s letter was written after the rain, but right now the weather in Paris was lovely. Sunlight streamed through the windows, carrying the same healing quality he had described in Darren.
Jenny: [We really had the simplest kind of happiness back then.]
Rebecca couldn’t quite remember how happy she had been in those days. Her whole life then had consisted of studying, dancing, and quietly liking someone.
Maybe because she had experienced too much deep pain since then, the happiness and unhappiness of those years had faded.
Jenry: [Where did you get this sketch?]
Rebecca: (Vance sent it. Darren drew it. It was hanging on the wall of a countryside guesthouse in France. Isn’t that kind of amazing?]
Jenny: [What is Vance doing now? Are you two not fighting anymore?]
Rebecca told the story of Vance following Darren’s old travel route. She knew Jenny cared more about what was happening between her and Vance.
Rebecca: [Jenny…]
Divorcing Vance had felt like cutting off a piece of her flesh, and the whole messy chapter with Desmond had left a shadow in her heart that refused to fade.
Various thoughts flooded her mind, but she couldn’t shape them into words.
Jenny: [What’s wrong?]
Rebecca: [Loving or hating someone takes energy. So, I’ve decided not to hate anyone anymore, and I won’t fall in love with
” anyone either.]
Jenny guessed that Rebecca and Desmond had broken up. She had never really been optimistic about them anyway. Breaking up was probably for the best–better a short pain than a long one.
But Rebecca had clearly been hurt again. Not wanting to offer empty comfort, Jenny tried to lighten the mood. Jenny: (Don’t be so pessimistic. Don’t you love me?]
Rebecca: [Yes, I love you! Good enough?]
Jenny sent her a “sisters” emoji.
Rebecca was staying mostly at Kaitlyn’s house now, but she still returned occasionally to the apartment near school for a quick lunch break or to shower after dancing
Desmond was no longer living next door, but Denise was: They ran into each other from time to time. Denise still addressed her warmly, but Rebecca found it hard to face her.

Denise felt guilty, so their encounters were usually awkward. Until one day, after the greeting, Denise remained standing there, looking like she had something to say.
