Chapter 566
Rebecca picked up a piece of black bread, dipped it in the stew broth, and took a bite.
It was still very hard and chewy. The parts not soaked in broth were tough enough to hurt the inside of her mouth.
She imagined Darren eating this kind of bread and, perhaps because of the alcohol, his image grew clearer in her mind She began to remember that no matter what he ate, he always seemed genuinely happy.
There had been one time…
She had practiced so late that when she finally reached the cafeteria, most trays were already empty. Only Darren was still at the
counter.
She usually didn’t pay much attention to him, but that day she noticed how much he ate. His tray was twice the size of hers and piled high with rice. Only two dishes remained at the window–a bit of cabbage and some meat. He looked ready to take it all.
Noticing her arrival, he only took half a scoop of cabbage and started to leave. She guessed he was leaving the meat and the rest for her.
“Hey, let’s split the meat,” she called after him.
How could he eat that huge tray of rice with only half a scoop of cabbage? But he turned around with a mysterious smile.
“I know a real delicacy. Want to come eat it with me?”
“Huh?”
She was intrigued by his expression. Delicacy?
She ended up going with him, mostly out of guilt. If he was tricking her, she figured she could at least split the meat with him. He led her into the school woods to hunt for cicada nymphs. When he piled a small mound of them in front of her, she nearly lost it.
“You… should just eat the meat,” she said with a pale face, pushing her plate toward him.
“You don’t understand,” he said mysteriously. “They’re delicious.”
She watched as he cleaned them, built a simple stove with stones, and used the lid of his stainless–steel lunchbox as a pas to roast the cicada nymphs. Then he invited her to try some.
She stayed out of pure guilt. But there was no way she was eating that. She gave him all the meat from heppiate, but he still
insisted on eating the insects.
“Since you gave me half the meat, I’ll give you half the bugs,” he said.
Terrified, she quickly pulled her plate back. is the end, he returned the lean meat to her, keeping only the fatty parts and chili peppers for himself.
“This is good! The bugs taste even better with fat and spice!” he exclaimed, eating with relish
Rebecca had no idea how she had managed to finish her food. It was probably because she had practiced so hard and was starving
On their way back, he said, “You know, locusts are good, too. Next time
