On the way home, Josette was much relieved. However, the moment they arrived back at the house, tension returned.

Desmond was standing right outside. Rebecca was still in the car when he rushed into the middle of the driveway, blocking their path.

“Rebecca!” he shouted, slapping the car window.

He seemed certain she was inside.

“I’ll go check,” said the new bodyguard Gabriel had assigned, who was sitting in the passenger seat.

Rebecca nodded. “Find out what he wants.”

After the bodyguard got out, she cracked her window just enough to hear their conversation.

“Is Rebecca in the car? Ask her to step out and talk to me,” Desmond said urgently.

“You can tell me. I’ll pass on the words,” the bodyguard replied firmly.

“You?” Desmond’s tone dripped with disdain. “You can speak on her behalf?”

“Yes,” the bodyguard answered curtly.

Desmond grew irritated and moved to slap the window again. “Rebecca, I know you’re in there. I have something important to tell you.”

“Ms. Perry orders me to pass on your words.” The bodyguard stepped between him and the car.

“Anything?” Desmond snapped. “What about private matters? Can you handle those, too?”

Rebecca frowned and glanced at Josette. The latter patted her hand reassuringly. Rebecca was about to roll the window down when the bodyguard answered, “Yes. I’ll decide on Mr. Rossi’s behalf exactly how hard to beat you.”

Desmond pointed at him. “Does your boss know how arrogant you are? If you delay this, can you take responsibility?”

Rebecca opened the window just a little wider so her voice could carry. “Desmond.”

Desmond’s face lit up, and he pushed the bodyguard aside. “She called me!”

But she was still behind the window. Only part of her forehead was visible.

“Just say what you need to say,” she said.

Desmond choked up. “You won’t even see me anymore?”

She sighed. “There is no need for this.”

“I flew here overnight from home the same day I heard the news-just to protect you. And you won’t even see me?” His voice was thick with grievance.

His tone reminded her of how he used to look at her with those puppy-dog eyes. The phrase “for you” made her chest tighten again.

“If you really have something important to tell me, then say it. If you just come to say these things, then I’m going inside,” she said.
