Chapter 609
Rebecca opened the box as he asked.
“So, what is inside?” Vance struggled to speak.
He must have been in a lot of pain. Every word seemed difficult, yet he refused to stay silent.
Rebecca frowned. “If you’re not feeling well, stop talking.”
He smiled, but the movement clearly hurt. He winced a little. “How can I not talk? I want to.”
Inside were a couple of gift cards, a handwritten note, and a few small, carefully chosen items. She held them up. Gift cards, and look, she even wrote you a note. Satisfied?”
“Yeah.” His gaze softened. “She’s still so thoughtful, always planning and picking things out herself. I remember some years, everything was even matched-same theme, same wrapping.”
That was just how Josette did things. It was her quiet sense of ritual.
Rebecca carefully put everything back.
“If I give her gifts for the New Year, would that be crossing a line?” he asked.
Her fingers paused.
During their five years of marriage, Vance had always been generous. Every holiday, he gave Josette thoughtful, often lavish gifts, and he sent her money every month without fail.
And he made sure she was taken care of.
Her brief hesitation made him misunderstand. His voice lowered. “I just want to show my regards. I won’t bring anything for you anymore. That wouldn’t be appropriate.”
Rebecca set the box down, not expecting those words from him. For a moment, memories of past holidays at Josette’s house surfaced both Vance and Josette indulging her, always making sure she received something special.
“How much money do you have left?” she suddenly asked.
“What, still interested in my finances?” he said playfully.
She rolled her eyes. “Who’s interested in your money? I just…”
She just didn’t want him to end up with nothing.
“Maybe…” She hesitated, trying to find the right words.
“No need.”
“You don’t even know what I was going to say.”
“I’m fine.”
Rebecca was speechless, but the heavy mood had loosened considerably.
She relaxed a bit and said, “When you’re discharged, you should try the therapy at the clinic. Doesn’t it take months to heal from injuries like this? Let Dr. Davidson check on you and see if there’s a better plan.’

“Sure,” he agreed readily.
Having gone through something similar herself, she hesitated again. “Can I take a look?”
“No,” he refused quickly.
She frowned. “You don’t even know what I want to look at.”
