Chapter 612
Rebecca scrolled mindlessly through videos on her phone, but nothing registered.
She didn’t know what she was waiting for, but nothing came in the end. She drifted off to sleep, still clutching the phone.
She dreamed of the whole city being covered in fresh holiday decorations. It was New Year’s Eve. She had left Josette’s house carrying half a roasted chicken, heading to find Vance.
It was Vance’s first New Year after losing his grandmother. The old lady had passed away not long ago.
The weather was bitterly cold. Staying outside too long felt like standing in a freezer-much like the look in Vance’s eyes lately.
Vance and his grandmother lived in a large house-the only thing his father had left him. Rebecca had been there once and remembered the way.
But on this night when every house glowed with lights, Vance’s home was dark.
She could imagine the lonely young wolf licking his wounds in the darkness while the rest of the world celebrated.
She thought he had exiled himself to the night. But she was wrong.
She rang the doorbell for a long time, but no one answered. She wondered if he was at a relative’s house, but that was impossible.
He had no relatives, and even if he did, his pride would never let him show up looking broken. She wondered if he was at a classmate’s place, but that was even less likely. His self-respect wouldn’t allow anyone to see him like that.

She could only hope he had found somewhere warm to spend the holiday. Holding the roasted chicken, she headed back and ran into someone else at the intersection.
“Hey,” Darren greeted her with a big grin. “Looking for Vance?”
She nodded.
“Whoa, what’s that? Smells amazing,” he sniffed.
She opened the bag to show him, and he took it without hesitation. “Looks delicious!”
She didn’t try to snatch it back. It was better to let him eat it than to let it go to waste.
“I know where Vance is,” he said, biting into the chicken.
She looked at him, puzzled.
“Come with me!” He led her to an empty lot.
There in the darkness, Vance and a girl were sitting on the steps, lighting sparklers. In the sparkling light, the girl laughed brightly.
It was the first time young Rebecca had seen Catherine Welch, but the dreaming Rebecca knew exactly who she was. The scene hurt her deeply both in the dream and in reality.
