Five Years of Marriage to Mr. Bradford (by Koi Fish) novel Chapter 613

Chapter 613

Rebecca tossed and turned, her dreams filled with high school. She woke up but dreamed again. Only in the early morning hours did she finally sleep deeply.

She woke up close to noon.

Downstairs, Josette had already packed lunch for the hospital visit. She had even prepared a French meal in case Anna wasn’t used to American food.

“Grandma, why didn’t you wake me?” Rebecca said, coming down the stairs.

If she hadn’t woken up, Josette might have left alone.

A shadow of worry crossed Josette’s face for a split second. “No worries. Visiting him is something I want to do.

“Wait for me. I’ll come along,” Rebecca said quickly.

She guessed that Josette was doing this because Vance had risked his life to save them, just as Rebecca had once saved him. But he had saved more than just Josette; he had saved her, too.

When they arrived at the hospital, the ward door was closed. Anna opened it as a knock, only to panic at the sight of Rebecca and quickly pull it shut.

“Vance is having his dressing changed,” she stammered.

The moment the door opened, Rebecca glimpsed a doctor in a white coat bent over the bed. It really was a dressing change.

“How is he today?” Rebecca asked from the doorway.

“He is doing okay,” Anna replied shakily.

The conversation died there. Rebecca lowered her head and waited quietly outside. A long while later, the doctor came out and said the wound was healing well.

The tension in Rebecca’s chest eased a little. But when they entered the room, Vance looked even paler than yesterday.

The blanket covered him completely. Seeing her dazed expression, he managed a small smile. “What’s with that face? It just hurt a bit when they changed the dressing.”

Hurt a bit? She had been there before and understood what it felt like.

Seven years ago, she had lain in a hospital bed just like this, forcing smiles and telling him, “It doesn’t hurt. I’m fine. Don’t worry.”

In fact, she had been in agony.

She didn’t say much. Most of the time, she stood at a distance, watching. The caregiver raised the head of the bed so he could eat.

Josette had brought many delicacies, including the pasta he liked. To keep it from getting soggy, she had packed the chicken broth and pasta separately. Now, pouring the hot broth over the pasta made a great dish.

But for a patient, even delicious food could feel like a burden. He could only finish half a plate. After resting for a while, he asked for a few more bites, as if he didn’t want to disappoint Josette.
